Notice it was an American who did it.

American charged with subversion in Zimbabwe goes to court
https://www.yahoo.com/news/american-cha ... 09016.html

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — An American woman charged with subversion in Zimbabwe for allegedly insulting the president on Twitter as a "sick man" made her first court appearance on Saturday as her lawyers disputed the charges that carry up to 20 years in prison.

I feel sorry for her. She must really be scared. I guess she never heard the expression, "When in Rome..." :(

Also notice her age.
I have grand sons of similar ages that feel they must comment on and protest openly everything they don;t like.
When reminded that they couldn't protest in some countries they say they would because they have rights.
Maybe they will think this girl has rights also.

She has the right to be arrested and jailed - stupid is as stupid does.

Yes, but look at what happened to that healthy young man who got arrested and jailed in N. Korea for messing with a political banner. He was never the same again, after his imprisonment.

I don't imagine this country in Africa which has arrested her would be any improvement in conditions.

Pretty sure he died so never the same is a bit of an understatement - and that was an amazingly stupid action to take in probably the worse place to do it in.

Very possible.

Seems very bizarre that these folks seem to feel/believe that their US rights somehow convey when out of our country.

Yes, I agree with you. There appears to be much to learn, for some, along the lines of having a practical perspective on what may or may not be acceptable behavior in other countries, especially those which, even on the surface, as a bare minimum, appear to have different philosophies and, likely, far different standards of what is acceptable conduct on the part of visitors. Not every place sees Americans as "entitled" to self-expression everywhere they might go.

This may be a dubious analogy, but Americans being saucy or "entitled" when visiting other lands might be like a suburban backyard bar-be-que-er rolling out a grill, in an open field, alongside a stream in Alaska, far up in the wilderness, loading it up with cutlets and salmon, and enjoying, with feet-up and lounging alongside, the fragrance of the smoke wafting up into the Alaskan breeze, And not expecting COMPANY.

Yeah, and I doubt the current administration will intercede on her behalf  ...at least not right away.

Indeed. They will have to discover where Zimbabwe is 1st; fortunately they will know that Twitter works there,

Maybe if the administration waits awhile she will learn that she can't do or say anything she wants in all countries as she can in the U.S.
How do we know that the admin has not already tried? Does everything need to be part of a big show? I know that is what most think of
the president but we do not know for sure. I don't think I saw anything about this on net work TV. Probably missed it. Oh well.

The United States does not act in these situations. I can think back as far as Clinton. No president has intervened in foreign punishment of rich kids backpacking abroad.

Anyone remember the American teenager that was caned in Singapore for vandalism in 1994 ?
http://www.nytimes.com/1994/06/27/us/te ... scars.html

During his imprisonment in Singapore, Fay's parents appealed to the international community for clemency, maintaining his innocence. But few people protested the way his parents had hoped and a plea from President Clinton to the Singapore government resulted in only two fewer lashes.

He didn't learn his lesson very well.

Four years later, Mr. Fay is once again in the news. Last week, Fay was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia in Winter Park, Fla.

Only if it's NK, or some similar country like Iran; then the WH and State send a note of protest and stamp their feet, get red in the face, and then go down to the bar and get a drink.

Or we could do like Obama did with Iran and give them 400 billion dollars. That got a few people released.

Is the National Anthem Racist? California NAACP Wants It Gone
http://www.newsweek.com/naacp-urges-con ... hem-705207

The California chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is demanding that Congress get rid of the national anthem for lyrics it says are anti-black—the latest race-based dispute over the country’s main secular hymn.

The group is pushing two resolutions through Congress that would do away with the national anthem—which they say is “one of the most racist, pro-slavery, anti-black songs in the American lexicon”—and find a replacement.

“This song is wrong; it shouldn’t have been there, we didn’t have it till 1931, so it won’t kill us if it goes away,” Alice Huffman, the president of the California NAACP told CBS13.
