My agent thinks we're very close. It's a tough era for unusual fiction right now, though I think there are readers dying for something different. The major publishers keep saying the same thing: talented writing, snappy dialogue, great characters, fresh plot, but too quirky. You just have to keep trying.

Just myself, and I've come to the conclusion that I will be doing projects like the Pro Stock drag racing history series Im working on right now - pay me as I go. At any rate, today there are options like web publishing (digital), on-demand publishing (print what you need as the orders come in, instead of sitting on cases like I am), etc. As I am sure you've found out, its a horrifically tough market to break into due to the costs of marketing, distribution, and production; I will not self-publish again without somebody bankrolling the whole deal. Your work is pretty solid and well-developed; my personal thought would be to look at getting some short stuff published in some of the more avant-garde fiction magazines that you can portfolio it to show to potential publishers. I am doing stuff for CTT when the opportunity comes up, but they like to write it themselves - so all I have do is set up the lights, push the button, and get a check (right, Dennis?). MY SHAMELESS PLUG - always looking for completed layouts in the east TN and Philadelphia areas for possible magazine stories!

I thought about that, but the page rate per compared to the flat photo rate was pretty close, so Im happy doing it this way. I would like to do some tech stuff for them like I do in the automotive business - professional builder technique, etc., but nothing has come up to date. I like shooting layouts; interesting challenges...

Amalie, I've finished as a finalist in three short story competitions, which the editors keep telling me is very rare for an unknown, but which doesn't do me a damn bit of good. I just need an absurd shot of good luck. Know any good-luck rituals?

Best of luck; I know how frustrating it can be, but the work speaks for itself. Ya just got to figure out which stream the fish are biting in....

Got mixed-feelings, too, about impinging on Gomer’s business. Hell, just by looking at the condition of his tooth, you can tell he needs the money. Don’t wanta make any hard feelings, but maybe if Gomer didn’t throw all his money at liquor and hard women and San Diegan’s ("Gomer, it's sure-fire! Can’t-lose!) money-making schemes…
But by the way youse guys drink, seems like there’s a living to be made by both establishments. If not, heck, we can burn all the IOUs to heat the place.

Jon, does your Berk run really really smooth? Mine seems to have a slight limp at very slow speeds. It also sparks a bit near the rear drivers. Any ideas?
Do you oil every year? Do you do the gearbox lube? I've checked mine for 7 years and they're always okay. I used some high-tech super aircraft lube though.
