Prices for selling train stuff

Grandson has a Lionel Thomas set from @ 2005(?).
My oldest kid is 62. Youngest great grand is 13.

Really? Your kids are in their fifties and sixties, never bought any three-rail for themselves, yet continue to fight over who gets which of your trains - while you're still alive, and in the same room?

If you are selling stuff simply to expedite things for the heirs, I'd say save yourself some hassle and put it in your will that it goes to the grand kid that actually likes trains and let the son that is only interested in $$$ go fish.

If the reasons are otherwise, you've already seen most of the options, and the best not involving Ebay is (opinion) the OGR board.

My thoughts: I think you should continue to enjoy your trains.
Maybe get rid of the stuff you consider to be junk.
Identify each item with a hidden tag or sticker, and make notes in a book.
Tell the family about services like Stout auction.

Enjoy your trains some more.

Rich, your thinking is similar to mine. The only thing is, the grandson hasn't bought any more three-rail, beyond his Thomas set. It's nice that he likes helping Roger out, but I'm not sure he is really in to three-rail.

If Roger prefers his stuff stay in the family, there is but ONE possible option. That choice might be a maybe, but the other way it's gone for sure! Roger's call whatever the case!

It almost is to me now, I have gotten more interested in On2½ and the late steam/early diesel era. But, as you know, I have absolutely NO problem mixing eras:

They have become friendly with a Sasquatch that seems to havw moved in.

I've been selling trains at train shows for a while now. Here are a few tips that you and most others have also figured out.
- wander around the show before it opens and see what others are charging for the same items as yours. Price yours lower.
- prices for post war and MPC are about half what greenbergs lists unless they are new in the box. If they are runners even less than half.
- No offense but MPC is a really tough sell - price them low or you will be taking them back home.
- Modern scale detailed cars are in demand and are easier to sell.
- As one who manages train shows and tries to sell trains the more time you sit at your table the more you sell. Face time helps.
- I price my cheaper items 1 or 2 dollars higher, expensive items $5 higher then negotiate down.
- If someone shows interest I'll lower the price to the next lower $5 increment.
- Take the trains out of the box to display if you have the table space. Set the train on the box.
- Transformers with lights like a ZW I plug in. Green lights attract eyes.
- HO trains are easy to sell at toy train shows. HO dealers tend to sell the best.
- I don't worry too much about what I paid for a train. I look at it as the cost of owning/using it for awhile.

I don't think I am going to worry about what I paid for an item. My acquiring stuff was unplanned. If I liked it I bought it.
