We were a pretty rough and tough student body but NONE of us would have ever considered attacking a teacher.

Same here. Reminds me of Lindberg Junior High (12 years old to 14 years old) I attended in Long Beach, Calif. There was a fight every afternoon after school and 10 % of the girls were sent to a school for pregnant teenagers before they finished their three years at Lindberg. (No correlation between the two events that I know of.)

The teachers that got sent to Lindberg were something else. I remember one math teacher. One day he was two or three minutes late and the class was in an uproar, throwing erasures and wads of paper, dancing on the teacher's desk, and shouting. The instructor heard us from the other end of the corridor. He was not a big guy, but he was once a marine corp D.I. He appeared in the door way and shouted, "Shut up!"

The utter silence (other than a momentary rustle from 35 students taking their seats) was deafening. Then came a lecture worthy of R. Lee Ermey.

The next time he was late everyone was already in their seats speaking in whispers, if at all.

How does a teacher "teach," according to your standards ? What is required ?

If you were the person in-charge of hiring teachers, what would you look for and require as the skill(s) required?

This probably won't satisfy you Murph, because it is an intangible. There are some people out there that have the knack to explain difficult concepts and make them understandable to the average "Joe". They can pick out the important points, and phrase them in a succinct manner.

Yes, those essentials, and a whole lot of energy and will to do so, and a strong sense and need to be of real service to others, who are put in their care.

You haven't heard about the male teachers and female students? That actually seems to be more common. At least in this area.
In both cases I have never been sure who was the instigator.
I think either way is more common today than in the past.

I would say that factor would be key to a lot of the problems and trouble in some schools.

There are students who have attacking, in endlessly myriad ways, a teacher, as well as any academic progress in a classroom, down to a lethal science. They are very accomplished at being disruptive because such turmoil fits their preferred lifestyle and pleases and amuses them immensely. They are professional hoodlums at a very early age, often enough.

It ain't just that, Murph. Most of those kids come from single parent homes, most notably without fathers. Mothers are mostly on welfare, and they instruct their kids to act up in school, then they get "crazy" check increases in welfare. Another one of those great generosities bestowed on them by the liberals, at the expense of the state or federal tax payer. That way, mom has more money for crack or smack.

It is my firm opinion, from my own work life, that if you cannot explain something difficult in a way understandable to a lay person, you probably a) don't understand it all that well yourself or b) you really don't give a damn.
