I see that on the Lima built UP locos and think I see what you are referring to. Looks like a big beam that must rock with the motion of the valve gear.

The PRR had some of that. I'm not sure how much the stuff varied from different builders, but it likely did. As they say, variety is the spice of life.

Rich, I didn't word my post very well. The UP 2-10-2 fleet was comprised of locos built by 3 different builders. I know they didn't do that with later locos and had to be interesting for maintenance crews. I'm sure there were/are major changes on other 2-10-2's going to other railroads from these same builders. I guess it was a powerhouse of the day.

This is how mine start out. The drivers are Lorenzen computer-cut brass. They got replaced early on with good old cast iron.

How about your 2-10-2 "Decks"? I read the mail article in an early 2000 OSN last night and saw where you won the OSW with one and had another unpainted to show what goes into building. Still have them?

Yes. Enhanced the photos last night. The one in brass is the more accurate model, and is now in "red lead" awaiting its Locomotive Black.

I should do tenders. Did I already do them? SP had an amazing variety.

here you go - first one is my first attempt. the flaw is the cab is too high. Oh- and the number is 3716 on one side; 3761 on the other. Mistake - I shall fix it maybe . . .

And this is the second attempt - in the same brass that I displayed it at OSW. It now resides in red oxide, ready for final black:

And a note about tenders: SP interchanged tenders almost at will - all my SP tenders are set up to interchange between locomotives. Both of these models and their tenders are 1/4" scale, but believe me I have enough 17/64 tenders to do mix and match for weeks.

Really nice. Love painted and weathered locos, but always have a soft spot for natural brass. I still have a couple of locos that are natural brass and will stay that way forever. Really allows you to see the detail much more than a painted loco.
