Early Sunset gearboxes:

Somebody told Mort that O Scalers wanted brass gears. They would fail after three times around the museum layout. I think Mort sent me a small handful of bronze replacements, and all were happy.

I believe that all factory painted Sunset steam has bronze gearing, and I also believe they are bulletproof.

I also believe that Rod Miller can make Gerry White gearboxes. No, I am almost sure . . .

The NWSL Mod O.6 is a good choice if you cannot get the proper axle gear. PM me when you get serious about fixing that axle.

Yes he can. As you know, he took over for Gerry. I suppose it's possible the model shown actually has a gearbox built by Rod but I still call them Gerry White gearboxes. http://www.rodmiller.com/gearbox_tour.html

This is an old photo with an Adams tender and no Gresley stuff. I will take some time to stick the proper tender together and take some more photos.
I think this is about ten years ago - it does run, and smoothly, but I have not taken it around any corners yet. I think I am scared it won't make my max 74" radius. Those are my side rods. I may replace the drivers with good old cast iron, but I do like these USH drivers. They are also perfect for AC class locomotives in 17/64 scale.

Got curious what Whyte called this wheel arrangement and looked it up: "Union Pacific". Suspect you are probably in trouble with your 74 inch radii. Can't imagine that configuration would have made it in the East. The PRR had problems with the S2 turbine and that was only a 6-8-6! Probably justified by all of Uncle Pete's wide open turf. It would look a lot better with a pilot truck.

What do you think of the possibility of marrying the two locos together (eBay and mine) to get the GW drive into my new 9000? Also, I see it looks like a screw has stripped out of one driver on the GW modified model. Simple or hard to fix and maybe that can't be answered without inspection?

i converted many 3rd Rail locos (3 rail version) for a modeler near York pa to 2 rail. One of them was the PRR Version of the N&W Y-3 by Sunset. It had brass axle gears that were quickly chewed up in operation. Scott Mann sent me replacement bronze gears and that solved the problem. So, there were some Sunset painted brass locos shipped with brass axle gears.

While I am not sure I was responsible for the shift to bronze, Mort and I had several conversations about it, and my father dug up a suitable alloy for the application.

Side rod screws are easy. Most difficult/expensive part is shipping.

I think the best shot is a new axle gear. If Sunset or I have one, happy to put it on for you. Second-best - NWSL.

Whose import is that Bob? It has some really nice details and excellent paint and looks it might have roots in 3R due to the pony truck wheels. Never saw a sand dome that square, but that means nothing. Looks like several blind drivers per side???? Nice loco.

Lionel is doing good work! You should see the FEF, and even better, the newest PA. Plastic (ugh), but dead-accurate except for running gear.

I heard their FEF is very nice and accurate. Heck, I still say their scale F-3 is one of the nicest and most correct F-3 shells on the planet. I have some KEY UP F-3's and the lionel stands up quite well. P&D has always been the high water mark for plastic "F" units, but it and the Lionel are so close I can't call it.
