The white color is from calcium nitrate used to control odor in reclaimed water. The white color is evidence of a leak in the fountain valve. I rode out there this morning and used the fountain... the valve was not leaking... so it must be from an old leak.

According to City of Tucson Water Department Water Quality and Operations Division, in most cases, the minimum detectable level of a contaminant in drinking water at Silverbell Lake is well below the EPA regulatory limit for that contaminant.

Wayne, Delightful seeing that photo of the two of you. I remember her from a couple previous pictures you posted on MTJ, quite some time ago, where she had a different hairdo, with longer and fuller hair, rich with luxurious curls. Each time you have shown her to us, she had the most welcoming and warm smile lighting up her presence, it appeared to me, just like in this latest photo you have decided to share with us.

How fortunate it is that you have those photos.

Wayne,
So the water is drinkable. The sign is for legal reasons in case someone does get sick.

Potable water is an issue, no doubt. The well for my residence was drilled to a depth of 500 feet (back in 1982) and it tested for coliform bacteria, from day one, so I have purchased drinking water from the git go. My next door neighbor's well recently went dry and the well drillers reused the original well shaft and drilled to a depth of 700 feet. I am curious how that water tested, noting that our two wells are about 100 yards apart!

Could the fountain be for car radiators? I certainly wouldn't drink water labeled "don't drink".

My guess would be that the "Do Not Drink" applies to any source OTHER than the fountains. The idea that our friend Wayne is still here with us (THANKFULLY) sort of reinforces that idea!

Why would they put this sign on the fountain, if it didn't supply recycled water? Note the symbol of the drinking head, with a line through it:

Drinking recycled water is common in many places in the USA.

The EPA says, "Recycled water can satisfy most water demands, as long as it is adequately treated to ensure water quality appropriate for the use."

A common example of water recycling occurs when cities draw their water supplies from rivers, such as the Colorado River and the Mississippi River, that receive wastewater discharges upstream from those cities. Water from these rivers has been reused, treated, and piped into the water supply a number of times before the last downstream user withdraws the water.

Although most water recycling projects have been developed to meet nonpotable water demands, a number of projects use recycled water indirectly for potable purposes. These projects include recharging ground water aquifers (as the Sweetwater plant in Tucson does) and augmenting surface water reservoirs with recycled water. In ground water recharge projects, recycled water can be spread or injected into ground water aquifers to augment ground water supplies. For example, since 1976, the Water Factory 21 Direct Injection Project, located in Orange County, California, has been injecting recycled water into the aquifer augmenting the potable ground water supply.

While numerous successful ground water recharge projects have been operated for many years, planned augmentation of surface water reservoirs has been less common. However, there are some existing projects and others in the planning stages. For example, since 1978, the upper Occoquan Sewage Authority has been discharging recycled water into a stream above Occoquan Reservoir, a potable water supply source for Fairfax County, Virginia. In San Diego, California, the Indirect Potable Reuse Reservoir Augmentation Project is currently being studied. If deemed technically feasible and approved by the City Council and Mayor, this project would augment the San Vicente Reservoir with 12,000 acre-feet per year of recycled water treated at a new Advanced Water Treatment Plant.

Wayne, it's not that I oppose drinking recycled water in all cases. It all depends on the kinds and levels of treatment. Of course, we do a lot of water recycling in L.A. If the sign says "don't drink this water", I'm not going to drink it.

It amuses me that "they" would put a water fountain somewhere and then put a sign on saying not to use it. As I am not within 1000 miles of that location, I don't expect to have to make a decision as to yes or no!     Maybe they should pipe in water from Flint!

It's reverse psychology. People using that park need to stay hydrated. otherwise they would turn into raisins. If you tell them to drink they wont. If you tell them they can't they will slurp it down. That little sign saves desert rescue from wasting time on dehydrated hikers.

Decades ago, I've seen people wash themselves in some of those cement-bowl pedestal drinking-water fountains that used to be (still present ?) in Central Park, as well as some other lesser parks. I've seen people take large mouthfuls in the same such drinking fountains, swill it in their mouths, and then expectorate onto the fixtures.

I've heard there are very new, long-sought mini-restrooms on some mid-town Manhattan sidewalks in NYC , nowadays, into which bouquets of flowers are placed, to underscore a positive ambiance, I assume. One can only imagine what will take place in them, eventually.

I recall stopping at a rest area east of Clinton, NJ on 22/78. A friend needed to take a leak. He found the porta-john to be completely filled. Imagine being the last to use it!
