Are you sure that was attempted weathering? Could it be a bad case of paint flaking, possibly after reacting with the foam it was stored in?
Somehow everything but the fuel tank and air tanks....yeah...entirely within the realm of possibilities.

But the angled racing strips along the long hood kind of give it away...like it went through some huge mud bogs and threw the mud up from the wheels...right.
