I believe it is easier to bid in person than on line ( I was watching the Corbin Mike, and probably would have chased it a little if I was on site (Dan, did you win the Corbin Mike ?)).

And whoever won the Rock Island Pacific (Lobaugh chassis, Mr. Turner ?) has a nice looking locomotive.

No doubt about it, and you can also see that on which you are bidding much better. Bad news is if you live several hundreds/thousands of miles from the auction site.

Speaking of the Rock Island Pacific, the friend of mine who bought the locomotive called last night to say the worm gear was DOA (several teeth missing). I offered to post to this group to see if Mr. Turner (or others) had suggestions on which direction to go - look for a replacement Lobaugh gear, install an appropriate NWSL Mod-whatever gear box, or have NWSL custom-cut a new gear (if they still do that sort of thing).

The guy foams Rock Island and is in love with the locomotive. I'm sure he would appreciate any help the group can give.

Have him measure the diameter over the teeth, and the number of teeth. The number of teeth, divided by the diameter, gives the diametral pitch. He'll also need to know how many teeth are on the mating worm. This determines the helical angle of the teeth. You count them, looking at the end of the worm.

Not me It was nice but I am not a collector I'm a runner. That's a good price for a piece of history so I'm sure it went to a good home.

The in house premium is 10% so yes, if you want a lot of items it's much better to go in person. Anyone reselling these was there.

I only use Lobaugh or NWSL gears. The locomotive left here in excellent running condition, and I would be willing to bet it did not turn a wheel at Jim's. If NWSL, they are guaranteed. NWSL will replace the part, and I will install it. I have not experienced problems with NWSL gears on my locomotives, but others have unbolted the case and re-installed it improperly, resulting in poor gear mesh.

Dan, sorry to hear that you didn't win the Corbin Mike, it certainly was a great "deal".

The Rock Island Pacific does not appear to have a NWSL gearbox, so as the other choice is a lobaugh gearbox, someone out there must have an extra lobaugh worm gear for the lucky buyer.

By the by, just looking in my scrapbook: a Corbin CNW Hudson will be coming up, along with some strange stuff, like a Rock Island Northern and a couple modified die cast Consolidations. And in case I did not mention it above, a Gerry White CBQ 2-10-4.
