Is it worth $2500? I can't really answer the question, but I know the guy selling this model and he is very knowledgeable about these early imports. He had a vast collection of brass models scratch built or modified by Gerry (Jerry) White.

I'll be surprised if it sells for the asking price, but it could happen.

I know him too. He is probably the expert on SP steam, or among the top three. To calibrate his offer, check out his 4-10-2 for a grand. If I hadn't built my own, I would buy it at that price!

I had an SP collector friend in KCMO and this loco was his holy grail. Told me back in the mid 90's if I ever ran across one to buy it for him up to $1250.00. I never ran across one and even forgot about it until this thread. Supposed to be a very nice and correct model.

Reading the posts above about the SP 4-10-2 for $1000, I just HAD to check it out.
Darned! Has the same number as my Car & Loco Shop one that I had ordered from Henry.
Guess I'm going to have to take a pass on this one...
(Besides, I also have an unpainted Max Gray of the same SP Class loco).

Butch--I got a little confused by your post. Did your friend lust after the Hudson, or
after the SP- Class steamer? I've heard that the SP had some errors, so I assume it
must be the Hudson that is the "very nice and correct model"? But is it $2,500 worth of
"rare rare rare"? I have bought some items from this seller in the past, the models always
have been quite nicely done, usually with medium weathering.

I think we were all talking about the MG 4-10-2 these last few posts. So what were the deficiencies on that nice model? I know the Sunset had an incorrect boiler, but was unaware that the MG had any serious problems.

I love the ten-coupled SP locomotives. CHurch's new book is on my bedside reading table. I have four total. What the heck, I may even post them again!

My comment applied to the Hudson Wolf. I missed the comments on the 4-10-2. I know next to nothing about SP models or values. I have a very narrow focus when it comes to O scale models and my experience is with UP locos, not SP. But, I broke out of my mold and just received my 1st SP model and it is a winner.

Thanks for the clarification, Butch. Better watch it though, those SP locos can
be addictive! Just be careful of the slippery slope, or you'll end up sliding down
to the bottom of the hill like me!
My UP loco situation probably mirrors your Espee loco situation....it started innocently
enough with a Lobaugh Challenger (Jabelman variety), then came an USH consolidation,
some Weaver FA/FB's...next thing I know I'm hanging on for dear life!

One half of all the Diesels around here are UP Armour yellow. Thre are ten Challengers, eight of which are UP. And I have that P-77 Pacific and two 4-12-2s. Not bad for an SP nut, huh?

Whoa Bob, that's a bunch. I've always felt the SP/UP had a lot in common and I like the SP, just couldn't afford to model/collect both roads, so all the $$$ went to UP. In the very beginning, when I came back into the hobby as an adult, it was the shear multitude of large and different locomotives that drew me to the UP. Interesting steam, fantastic turbines and very different early diesels, all running through the wide open spaces of the upper Northwest. Just blew me away.

Just started researching to super detailing a SS 9000 I have. Had a Kohs at one time, but sold it due to inaccuracies pointed out to me and didn't want to modify an otherwise beautiful loco that someone could enjoy in stock condition. The SS will never compare to the Kohs, but it will be fun to do and will be my work.
