I agree with you, Roger, about "It's a Wonderful Life." James Stewart's character was far too loud and shrill for me, and the film, overall, too "noire", too dark to be satisfied by the tinkling bell moment at the end about an angel getting its wings.....Ho-hum.

A dignified effort. I liked the Myrna Loy character, but found Virginia Mayo less than appealing - a poser. The parallel subplots were a nice aspect, indeed.

It is interesting to look back in time at what movies won the awards and then the others that did not....and then those that were not even nominated to see what really lasts.

Has anyone seen the reincarnation of the The Magnificent Seven with Denzel Washington directed by Antoine Fuqua. I like Denzel. My two favorite movies of his are "Man on Fire" and "The Equalizer" The Equalizer was directed by Antoine Fuqua.

Antoine said he wanted to get Denzel on a horse for a movie. I think he should have selected an original for a western and not a remake.Denzel did a good acting job. Don't try to compare him to Yul Byrnner. But to me the movie is over the top as what usually happens with remakes trying to out do the original.

Westerns are not doing as well as they once did. Disney's "The Lone Ranger" was a disaster. Disney gave Johnny Depp way too much freedom with it and he FKD it up. Just my opinion of course

You do know that The Magnificent Seven with Yul Brynner and the rest was a re-make of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, right? And, there's even a SF remake of the western version that even has Robert Vaughn in it playing the same character he did in The Magnificent Seven.

Does anybody KNOW if Juda Ben Hur was a real-life person in history?
For example, along the Via Dolorosa, Ben Hur (movie circa 1959) crouches down to offer Jesus a drink of water, but the director is careful not to have the water actually make it to His mouth, kicked away by one of the Roman escort; thus, the movie is careful not to insinuate a new entry into The New Testament .

Yet, Ben Hur's mother and sister are cleansed of leprosy as a result of being in the rain of the storm caused by The Crucifixion .

Rufus. as a big western fan I am aware that the Magnificent Seven, was a western adaptation of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. There are also three sequels. the Return of the Magnificent Seven,(1966) with Yul Brynner and then Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969), and The Magnificent Seven Ride (1972) with Lee Van Cleef. None were as successful as the original film.I don't believe that Robert Vaughn was in any of the squeals. I don't know what this (SF remake) is.

I am not knocking the new version. I have watched it several times and enjoyed it.
