A few CVRR pictures and some other related pictures....
Re: A few CVRR pictures and some other related pictures....
Murph,
Firing the furnace was determined by several things that I remember. There may be more.
In no particular order.
Quality and type of coal. Bituminous was the type in our area and it varied in "softness". Softer coal burned faster.
How warm you want the house to be. This can be affected by the outside temperature. The size of the house.
The age of the house AND it's inhabitants. You get the idea.
I recall "banking" the furnace before going to bed to make it through the night. During the day a shovel or two of
coal would be added every couple of hours. Remember all of the factors that could determine this.
An uncle had a stoker on his furnace that was filled about every three days.
I don't miss any of that stuff.

Then, how would we know anything was new? One wonders, why bother? If you don't remember, you have not learned. Whom would the whole "show" of old-to-new be for - Self-entertainment?

We have some serious thread drift here.
Might be a good thing, knowing only what is in front of them.
If you remembered this:
You might not be able to accomplish this:
They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

Spoiled, too!

No real idea but at one time the use of community Purple Martin bird houses in this part of PA was rather popular and I think they were also favored to to control flying insect life then as well.

While looking for an explanation for the "Air Conditioner" I found this:
1884 Picture Shows Old Black Bear Hotel And Saloon on A Muddy North Earl Street "
The old Black Bear hotel, landmark on North Earl street for many years, is shown in this old photograph. The picture belongs to Mrs. Celia McCleaf of 103 South Locust street, who remembers the establishment from her girlhood days. The picture is dated 1884 and the wording at the bottom indicates that the hotel had recently been remodeled. The signpost pictures a black bear and has the name, Black Bear Hotel, at the top. Beneath is the name of the proprietor, P. McAnulty. Mr. Mc-Anulty, whose "P." stood for Patrick, was widely known as "Pat" and was a familiar figure in Shippensburg for many years. The Black Bear saloon was located jn the portion of the building beneath the gable, behind the closed shutters in the picture. There were hotel rooms on the upper floor, but the bar constituted the most important part of the business. The McAnulty family lived on the ground floor of the portion of the building to the right - '. - - . The Black Bear was in operation on North Earl street for many years, and most of the time its proprietor was Mr. McAnulty. It flourished until Shippensburg went dry in the local option elections.
Beyond the hotel building may be seen the stock yards known as "The Exchange." Horses were bought and sold by a number of dealers who cooperated in the exchange on a plan similar to that now used in the farmers market The yards extended as far as the allev. Pools of water which may be seen in the picture indicate that the streets of 1884 would not com pare favorably with those of 1941. Mrs. McCleaf recalls that the streets were muddy whenever there was rain and that the sidewalks were very uneven. The picture shows a brick walk with a rough limestone curb separating it from the street. The railway tracks, then the Cumberland Valley Railroad, stood above the street at that time.and to cross them -with a carriage it was necessary to- go either to the Burd or King street crossing. The large stones which were used to ballast the roadbed may be seen in the picture.

The description, "The Black Bear saloon was located jn the portion of the building beneath the gable, behind the closed shutters in the picture." leads me to take a wild guess the "air conditioner" is actually a sign advertising a Saloon.
