Did anyone notice the load that soldier was carrying?

Weight of combat gear taking its toll on troops.

The US troops deployed in Afghanistan have to carry a serious load on high altitude rugged terrain and it is taking its toll. The Washington Post reports:

Army leaders and experts say the injuries -- linked to the stress of bearing heavy loads during repeated 12- or 15-month combat tours -- have increased the number of soldiers categorized as "non-deployable." Army personnel reported 257,000 acute orthopedic injuries in 2007, up from 247,000 the previous year.

In Afghanistan, soldiers routinely carry loads of 130 to 150 pounds for three-day missions, said Jim Stone, acting director of the soldier requirements division at the Army Infantry Center at Fort Benning, Ga. In Iraq, where patrols are more likely to use vehicles, loads range from 60 to nearly 100 pounds, he said.

Wayne, I think the marines were field testing a Boston Dynamics robot pack mule.

But I think tests were suspended after the Marines got it pregnant!

I am reminded, by the many good and decent voices on this forum and this thread in particular, of being Thankful for this pleasant place to come for conversation, a site seemingly self-purged of rancor, know-it-alls, and self-styled "experts". (Did I just manage to cram all that into one sentence?) Yup. Here I am. Glad to be free and still able. Thanks to many people better than I.
Be well, safe and happy, everybody.

Get yourself a slice of turkey and have a seat at the table!

Well, I shall be putting the turkey to the oven shortly, the stuffing is made, and the au gratin taters are also ready for the fire. My better 1/2 may make something with green beans.....

One hopes that my son or daughter drops by to put the feedbag on with us!

In the meantime, we have much football to watch, much mexican layered dip & chips, and beer to drink! Once that all starts, I shall be giving it my complete attention.

Have a good day, lads, and remember that the Bird is the Word!
