Harbor Freight small drill press - usually around fifty bucks - and green cutting fluid. Comes in a green can. Do not drill aluminum without green fluid. Not opinion.

Yes, that is a definite match to mine:

This indeed a Scale Model Railways model. Here is the listing in the 1937 catalog:

This is a Bill Lenoir designed model (no surprise given that it is Chicago Great Western). There is a photo spread of Bill's personal engine models in an old Model Railroader that includes one of these (probably the prototype model). Speaking of prototypes, here is a photo of the 1:1 Scale model:

Note for the record the information at bottom indicating source of the photo (to give credit where it is due). The boiler jacket sure is clean on these locomotives, by which I mean unadorned. I recall that the photo above shows the venerable ten-wheeler in post-war service. Sure wish there was a photo of the whole train.
My model, but the way, came from Joe Foehrkolb, who was kind enough to give me the opportunity to acquire it . It is one of the smoothest running locomotives I have, which I take as a testament to both the original model design but also Joe's fine rework of the drive after he acquired it (at a show, as I recall). I have a video clip of it somewhere -- I will find and post as time allows.

I am curious what that PS 4 Southern locomotive draws in amps with that type of motor??

I had just cut frame sides for an All Nation Atlantic when I saw Pete's photo. I bet the AN boiler would look good over a ten-wheeler mechanism like this.
Bill Lenoir had three of these on his layout, but I think they were hand made brass. I will look in my 1001 Locomotives book.

Sooo, nice to have a long weekend to leverage my indolence regarding Christmas shopping and yardwork into only slightly less productive things like finishing #201 here.

Finished product has all of its blistered paint chipped off, matched, primed and re-painted. New cab and headlight road#’s, replaced big honking 3/16 diameter incandescent bulb headlight (think “flashlight;” it literally screws into the smoke box and a back block) with another bulb.

Cleaned and greased worm gear, reworked fried wiring harness with wire and eyelets, cleaned brushes and commutator. Runs well but drones like an old carpet vacuum, ample puller, tad slippery on grades, draws 1 amp regardless of load which is weird to me.


If you’re not in a hurry and dying to know what a 65 year old permag motor sounds like at grade, click on below, sorry the image is so bad; my 15 year old Sony is better at stills than video and candidly photobucket doesn't stream this stuff very well.

That looks very sharp. An excellent save of a nice local varnish hauler.

That looks like an exact model of a SAL heavyweight coach, at least on the window pattern (sorry Bob, I know windows aren't your thing).
According to Paul Faulk's book, these cars (SAL #s 807-814 and 815-828) were 72'-4" long. Looks like some seated 48 people (deluxe seating) while others seated 74 people (standard seating).
The only 4-6-0 I have is an engine using a Weaver 4-6-0 3-rail chassis I got from Ed Rappe and a piece of 2" PVC round stock I turned to make the boiler:
It's really plain, I need to add some details. The valve gear is wrong:
and I wish I could find a slanted steam chest and valve gear like on this one:
This "Weaver" engine is a very smooth runner, once I replaced the traction tires.
A coach like the one pictured is the one car I'm lacking...must start looking for it!!!

Nice looking 4-6-0 there Bob, I like that smaller SAL power like #631 a lot; it has sort of "hot rod" look with the skinny boilers, large cabs and flat tenders.
The modernized coach is a re-worked Walthers #9175 ( a lot of these floating around on Ebay, very popular in its day) which is patterned after the P70Far, basically a P70 PRR modernized for commuter service. Working off those same photos in Faulk's book, I discarded the smooth roof and replaced it with an All Nation clerestory with a car length duct installed on one side. Everything else is pretty straightforward. Walthers offered these same sides as a generic "modernized" heavyweight with a clerestory roof as kit #9174 though I think the Walthers roof is a tad flat or too short appearence wise for SAL or (tbd) an L&N's HW

And when you do Walthers, anything in the 91xx series will make a decent car, if you resist the temptation to drill and nail those sides on. i am having pretty good luck with Pliobond.

BobT, can the sides be removed once the Pliobond is applied? I used Walthers Goo I think on my All-Nation OBS car a few years back and I was able to remove the sides for a repair. Pliobond is easier to get.
