There's not too much there and there wouldn't be on a layout either - how far do you think that the depth of that photo runs? 1/4 mile? 1000 feet? What's that distance in O scale? Figure about 30 feet in you basement. All that across 30 feet won't look like there's too much in a scene. The problem is that way too many modelers try to make that scene fit in 3 feet - then it is too much. Ad you compress that down, you have to thin it out.

A most excellent point, Rufus. You are totally right. And I have just learned from you.

Look at the traffic, the pedestrians, the businesses.
Every town in the area was like that. These were booming times even with,
if I recall, a recession after the war.
The smaller towns away from the valley that were not suburbs were very quiet.
Above are just memories. I was in high school in 1950. Rode a bicycle everywhere
when possible.
I would NOT want to return to those days but wish the valley still had today the life
it had then. At that time almost anybody who wanted to work could find a job in
the area. Today there are no jobs. Very sad.

Sorry for the above but when I see a picture of the area at that time nostalgia
beats me in the head and heart. It was once a good place to live.

That photo is one of my favorites. In my heart and my head, and maybe on this next layout, that area and the marvelous memories and people I knew and loved lives on.

That's a great point, Rufus. If we keep our proportion within our limited space, the sense of that scene can be preserved.

I've learned something as well.

Seeing that area now would break your heart. It certainly breaks mine.

North Weirton is even worse - there aren't any buildings there now.

Your agreement has inspired me to speak further, Roger.
In fact, from what I have heard from folks who used to live within a related area, metropolitan Pittsburgh , crime has become the main industry, up and down the communities along the Allegheny, Youghiogheny, and Monongahela rivers. For example, I've been warned, by members of my Duquesne High School Class of '62, to not even visit the graves of my parents, in McKeesport and Duquesne, PA, that a certain predatory "ilk" keeps an eye out for the bereaved, to make them their prey. I further understand that the high school actually closed due to the outrageous behavior of that same ilk. I don't know that to be a fact but have no intention of researching to find out. (If that statement offends anybody, then I say, go there and offer yourself up as a victim or hero and let me know the results . And I still won't return for a visit.)

What's gone is gone. I have no need to go to a funeral every day.

Murph,
Unfortunatley I agree once again.
A half hour away is Savannah. It is still a rather pretty and historic city.
It is now becoming know as a city of daily shootings.
I read that per capita the shooting rate in Savannah is higher than Chicago.

I've now totally exhausted my allotted portion of good thoughts, ideas & points for the month. All of the bad thoughts, ideas & points are ready for Halloween,   Hockey mask? Check! Chainsaw? Check! Zombie flamingoes? Check!

To consider the mind that came up with that concept - Zombie Flamngos! Egads is right. Things can get scary 'round heeeyaah.

Oh, well, I did consider naming a cat "Zoonyatta Moondatta", at one time, or "Oingle-boingle" but discouraged myself. Fortunately (for the cat.)
