If I may, what is "snipe hunt"?

"A snipe hunt is a type of practical joke that involves experienced people making fun of credulous newcomers by giving them an impossible or imaginary task."

Frank, when I was in the Boy Scouts we used to send tenderfeet out in the woods to look for snipe. The snipe is an English bird. You are unlikely to find them in the woods in Ohio.

But here's what they look like. Snipe do exist, just not here.

Martin's definition is a little less specific, but also correct.

According to the Sibley bird guide the bird is the Common Snipe.
It summers in the north, mostly Canada and winters in the south, mostly US.
Its markins make it very hard to see in underbrush that it frquents.

It can be as hard to find as the left handed monkey wrench unless you know where to look.

Sparrows, yes. Wrens, yes; even the occasional blue heron, but snipes? Somehow, with all my marauding in such places as these, I missed Snipes. Got to be more observant.

P.S. BTW, in the bottom photo, a particular geological feature is featured. Anybody spot it and know what it is? Hhhmmmmm? (I got "A's" in Geology100 and Geology200 classes.

Here's a hint: I took the photo when I was roaming around Upstate New York, just slightly north of Cortland and Homer.

Roger and George, You two are too cool. Far too cool. Yes, that entire hill is a terminal moraine, deposited there by the glaciers that pushed down from Canada, gouging out the Great Lakes, leaving their melt-water to fill those freshwater lakes. And I suppose one could consider that deposit to be "alluvial," but "till" might be a better term, or "meltwater deposit." (I haven't yet held a handful of it to understand better.)

What I thought was so interesting about that scene is that some enterprising entrepreneur invested in the land and all he has to do to make money is back a few machines up to his hill and dig the gravel out for sale for a variety of uses. That site is located along Rt. 41N, just beyond its intersection with Rt281, across from Dave's Veggies open-air market.

Did you know that Long Island and Staten Island are also terminal moraines, dumped there by and marking the limit of the glaciers? I'm going to offer the conjecture, for your consideration, that Cape Cod would be the same geologic formation?

If you take a walk in Central Park, NYC, you can see the gouged-in scratches from the glacier (nearly a mile high there) moving across the bedrock, which is exposed in places in the park.

It is alsofound insmall areas of eastern Ohio. It is called Karst topography. It usualy
occurs in areas that are mostly limestone. Don't remember much more about it but
it ha a unique appearance.

I went fossil hunting/digging in Ohio's limestone, when in college, and found several Paleozoic fossils (Brachiopoda & Cephalopoda), much to my glee. From that day forward, the geology professor and I were proper friends.

Yeah, but most are not safe for that type of use.
There is a section of Karst in southeast Ohio near the river that is mostly sink holes of from 3' to 10' in diameter and from 2' to 20' deep.
Most of the deeper ones have water in them that fluctuates with the river depth. It has been quite some time since I have been in that
area and it could be different now.

Look what you can learn on an exceptional model train forum. Can't do this on most.
