Miniature sealed ball bearings are usually press fit on the axle and in the housing. Not a problem during assembly because you can press on the inner and outer races. Disassembly often damages the bearing.
Of course it does not have to be that way. When I tried roller bearings on my slot car axles I made everything slip fit. Seemed to work fine.
I wonder if any museum display maintenance shops have tried sealed ball bearings?
Here is a list of common sizes for those not doing historically correct restoration: => http://www.nationalprecision.com/miniat ... d_fits.php

Wipers. We have experienced with higher current draws pitting of the races when you try to pick up through ball bearings, sealed or naught.
Just a Turner.

Wipers, correct. I like wipers on the back of the wheels where less dirt accumulates.

But for historic restoration, such as the City of Los Angeles, Maroon is not modifying bearings or wipers, just replacing what is worn.
The original parts might be better than any of our suggestions, originals seem to have lasted a long time.

That looks like an AHM design, maybe the C-Liner?

Plymouth switcher. I think the mechanism from the C-Liner was used to make these.

When you upgrade to sealed ball bearings, then you also do wipers.

I thought that it was a decent design but it needed (needs?) a better motor.

Ya, das is myna gestory and ich vill gestooka mit es
The postman brought me some NOS cloth-covered wire this morning for my E6 restoration. This will look sharp.

So, doesn't anybody have an opinion to venture regarding how much play in the axles and worm shaft is acceptable?
Jim
Edited to repair photo link

A few caps, some C4, and you're problems would be solved!

Yes, but I'd want to take out the whole closet full of them and go find a hobby that's not so plagued by wise guys.
AND WHAT ABOUT THAT AXLE PLAY?
