I've been out of town so many apologies to Tramp for the very late response. He asked "Isn't this area wonderful? Where did you stay? Where did you eat?" regarding our kayaking camping trip in Penobscot Bay.

That area is truly great! We first camped out at Warren Island State Park after outrunning the ferry and a nasty lightning storm then on to Butter Island, Hay Island and Ram Island. Butter was my favorite. From the high point there is an unbelievable sunset view of the bay. Also, the owner had a herd of 4 horned sheep that were way cool. Some people don't believe me about the 4 horns but I assure you it's true.

We brought most of our own food but did stop in North Haven for cheeseburgers and re-stocking the beer supply. We foraged for mussels and cooked them up too.

We're planning another trip for this summer but don't know exactly where yet.

Oh, and regarding the Xingu, it says "Light and Dark. Smooth as Silk." That remains to be seen. I hope it's better than you remember.

I miss steam also and hate to see the "graveyards" but if the railroads were still running steam most would be gone.

The second is on the PRR on the Sandusky to Columbus line that eventually went to the N&W.
The PRR leased those 2-10-4s from the ATSF in 1956. I made a trip to Columbus just to see them.

The PRR still had some of there own Js but not enough.
This was a fairly low speed line that was mainly used for coal hauling.
The locos could be found in any combination of SF or PRR.
The crew that I talked with, all were PRR crews, liked the ATSF locos
because they were so clean.They were also in better mechanical condition
than the PRR Js that had been in storage.

there is an article about the above on page 217 titled "Along the Atcheson, Topeka and Ohio".

I love opportunities like that where you can mix favourites and have history to back you up.

If I was to chose an American prototype to model, one would be the PRR Elmira Branch, heavy coal and ore trains pulled by I1s, L1 Mikes on mixed freight, but the twist was the pool arrangements with NYC hauling coal into New England. NYC Mohawks and cabooses freely mixed with the PRR equipment on the Elmira, and Pennsy I1s and cabin cars went through to DeWitt on the "Bow Trains" where they were swapped out for NYC power to go further east. In the early diesel era, NYC supplied FAs and the PRR had a separate number series of F3s equipped with Automatic Train Stop shoes to run on NYC in this service.

Then there was the Nicholas, Fayette and Greenbriar (sic?) in West Virginia, a coal hauler jointly owned and operated by C&O and NYC. When NYC ran it, they used USRA Mikes (H6) while C&O operated it with their small H-series 2-6-6-2. You can also add in a Shay that hauled bark-lumber (if memory serves) for tannic acid. A delightful mix of pretty handsome power.

Back to the ATSF leasers, Staufer's Pennsy Power and Pennsy Power II also have short passages and a photo each of that event.

One shown in the book mentioned above had an ATSF loco, a train of N&W hoppers and a PRR cabin car [caboose to non PRR people].
