I bought it at the hardware store in Hampstead, Maryland. It's actually made for Plow & Hearth. I had an Ace coupon for 30% off, so it ended up costing me ~ $75.00. I checked in with a couple of wood-stove/fireplace outlets in Timonium...their firebacks all ran around $250, and there wasn't much on the web for under $200. That seemed like alot for a slab of cast iron made in China...this seemed a good alternative.

I need to get a new grate next...the one I have is about thirty-five years old and I've nearly burned through the middle of it. I'd like to find something a bit shallower. To be honest, I think an open hearth sucks more heat out of the room than it puts in it...it's mostly "atmospheric"...the dogs seem to enjoy it the most.

I'm on my 2nd one in under 20 years - lousy cast iron from China does not hold up under black locust fires...... I have glass doors on my fireplace which cuts down on the draft a bit, but it can get uncomfortably hot in the room if I keep a hot fire going for a few hours. Wife likes it on a cold damp winter day..........

Forgot to mention that the famous model railroader Dennis Brennan and his wife Sandy attended my art opening for the Time Diptych series. We had some time on the day after to drink beer and drive around in the 1966 Impala.

Do any of you hobos know this magazine?





The Time diptychs were also featured in Maine Home + Design magazine, which I think is only available in New England.

I agree on the assessment of fireplaces sucking as much heat out the room through the chimney as adding, but they sure are great anyway,

You are probably correct, but then again I have also seen more than one example of the building that has expanded to encompass a pole.....

It is still "L" shaped, but the tower in the corner has been removed.

Wayne, since you enjoy researching things, you should look up my friend Rod Penner who might be the best realist painter in America. He has painted many views of McGregor. Comparing his paintings to Google street view is fascinating. Remember that I placed Rod's AMY NY show card in this diptych?

The Rumford style fireplace, named for it's inventor, Count Rumford, is noted for being efficient.

Your station is most unusual and appropriate for the 90 degree crossing, which makes me wonder, which came first.....track or building? Was a standard old building modified or built for the crossover?

There was a station on the Reading that had a round turret that was pretty neat, but I can't recall the name.

I agree - unique and defining. Commercially difficult since it puts a track demand on the modeler. Still, I do like it. It's also not all that complicated, so readily approachable as a project.
