When a meteorite enters the Earth’s atmosphere, it ionizes air molecules around it; it is this blazing track of ionized air that is called a meteor.

When the light disappears, a meteorite enters a stage called "dark flight"; it then no longer travels at an angle, but falls straight down. The Earth gains a mass estimated at 10 to the 8th power kilograms (1,102,311 tons) each day as a result of incoming debris from space. A meteorite in dark flight had never been photographed until two years ago. Anders Helstrup's sky diving camera caught a meteorite during dark flight as it passed by him while he was descending under his parachute.

People, cars and houses get hit by meteorites, but it is rare. Most of the 1,102,311 tons of meteor material falling on us is in the form of dust. Good thing because even a grain of sand at high velocity hurts.

Three thousand foot wide Meteor Crater in Arizona happened 50,000 years ago.

The object that excavated the crater was a nickel–iron meteorite about 165 yards across. Now that would hurt if it hit you. Archeologists date first humans in Arizona around 25,000 B.C.E., so no one was here to get hit by it.

The local natives tell a story they pass down from gerneration to generation of leaving the high country (where the crater is) because of fire falling from the sky. I thought sure this writing on the rocks near my house was related to the meteor hit. The above dates ruin that theory.

So, now I have another theory. Northern arizona had about 600 vocanoes going off from 1040 to 1100 C.E. At the time there were many Native Americans living in the area. The biggest, Sunset Crater Volcano, continued to erupt for 200 years building up a 1000 foot high cinder cone. Maybe the volcanoes have something to do with the story of their leaving Northern Arizona because of fire falling from the sky.

1.1 million tons per day? Criminy, that's alot of material. Brings into perspective the amount of surface area of earth, and how much of it is covered by water. At that rate it would seem one's house would be covered in a matter of years.
