John,

Good suggestion! I might end up doing that or I might find a truck with roller pickups at York next month. I really haven't decided yet.

I bought the caboose from Weaver undecorated and unassembled. The reason was so that I could paint the components correctly. Both the body and the cupola have black roofs and green sides. I had to mask them off.

OK.
How hard is it to remove the cupola?Does it need to be cut off?
I don't think I have seen a Weaver caboose.

He never took the cupola off. The caboose is a kit he is putting together.

The cupola snaps into the body. Weaver does not have, per se, kits. However, they did honor my request for an undecorated, unassembled model. Weaver does offer undecorated models as a regular part of their product line.

If you are interested, then you can either add text to your order on their website or call their customer service number.

I have found them very accommodating.

Everything by Weaver was kits back in the 80's. You can still find them on ebay.

You're welcome. Inexpensive plastic they were. Athearn style.
Example:

They also made craftsman kits under "Quality Craft" if I remember right.

Updated 3/26/2014:

OK, made a little bit of progress on the application of Squadron putty to the telephone poles. Getting it to go where you want (in the slots and holes) is a real PITA. However, it seems to dry nicely and sand nicely.

Took this photo of my WSX switcher next to the caboose body. Next to it is a jade green NYC boxcar. The caboose doesn't match the locomotive exactly, but it's not too far off, especially if I weather it.

Also, installed the split-shot sinker weights into the back of the crane truck. It works! Here's a shot of it.
