It had been several weeks since the bo called katy had moved on down the line to Del Rio. No mention lately of him and in fact most of the bo's had forgotten all about his short visit that day. All except the one bo called Tramp and he just could never get that camera out of his mind...that thing sure would have pawned real good.........

Late afternoon in the camp and most were laying back, some taking the afternoon nap while others were more concerned about the rain clouds that were gathering and the pick-up of the wind from the northwest...a sure sign of rain and maybe even some thunder....

Ha...Tramp luk oer yoder...nother bo headed over here. Never seed this un have you? Tramp looked at the small slight figure headed toward the bo camp and said....Caint say I regugnize em, wal wul jest have to wait un see who he kin be........

The stranger of a bo continued toward the camp and now they could see the slight figure of a rather young looking bo maybe 5' 1" or so.

Heide yawl, nice camp site yee gut er.....

Oh geez not another one of them Texas bo's was the thought that went through each of the camp bo's minds

...Wonder if yee mind me hangin over tonite? Won't ask fer any mor en a cup o joe if yee got any. Plan on movin up the line early tomaree, headin to de windy city.

Oh en by de way which o yu is the bo de call Tramp...got a note fer yee from down in south Texas mind ya....

Tramp's head snapped up when he heard this...a note for me, never had this happen before...specially since I've been a bo....

Ya stranger, thats me..Tramp I'm called..and jest what doye ave fer me?

The young looking bo pulled out a crumpled sheet of what looked like notebook paper from the rear pocket of his dirty jeans and thrust it toward tramp. Tramp was caught off guard by the quick thrust forward of the young bo's hand...Tramp took a step back and then realized the hand held a crumpled piece of paper, the note for him! Tramp reached out and took the piece of paper.

An dis be da note fer me...enh...

Tramp moved over to the fire and sat down, slowly he opened the crumpled piece of paper and began to read the poorly scrawled note.

Tramp..I ges you folks perty much fergat me..ya dis is frum katy...ya me...surry bout da camer but shur had ta pawn it quik..got in sum big trubles here in Del Rio..stayin in missun here til I gets sum wurk..dat pert senoreta dun run off wid de bigest meanist bull de SP hasz..name o "Bad" Stormer..alwazs careeze a big club lik ball bat and pistul..
katy

Tramp read through the note several times...the handwritting was poor, bordering on the unreadable....and he thought...well just why did he send me the note.....was it that he felt bad about the camera?? Well we will never know!

The wind was picking up good now as the storm approached..daylight was fading fast. As Tramp got ready to get some sleep he caught a glimps of the small young bo curled up next to the fire sound asleep.

The storm missed the camp that night and the next day dawned clear and bright. Tramp sat up and moved over to the fire.He saw that the small young bo was already moving away from the camp and through the field, heading for a line of box cars that probably would carry him closer to the windy city.

Wal wunder wat teda el bring?... muttered Tramp as he poured a cup of coffee.

Tramp woke that morning, and as he did every morning of his life, he ran quickly through what was left: two legs, two arms, nose to smell that sweet morning air, mouth to sip a burning swig of camp coffee, eyes to squint at the fat red sun breaking horizon. He considered what was in front--why look behind? He rustled up a few of the others. "'Bos," he said, "I got to head for Del Rio. There's a fellur down there by the name of Katy--don't know if you remember him--think he needs us. Anyone of ya with me?"

The sun was already coming into the dormitory room in the mission when Katy woke up. It had been a bad and restless night of trying to sleep. Monday morning and this was the day Katy was going to start the job they got for him, working in the cantalop fields.

Mornin Katy, said the older fellow Jake who was bunked next to Katy. Time ta rise n shine n git about yur biznes. Lets git down ta de kitchen n see ifn we kin get some grub fore wurk.

Katy sat up and pulled on the old faded jeans and slipped into the worn shoes. As he pulled on the old T&P sweatshirt he glanced over at Jake. Jake ur sur dat de cankterlup fields is de best fer workin? asked Katy.

Katy knew he had to leave Del Rio after he found out that the pretty senorita had told Bad Stormer about him. And Bad Stormer just would have no one in town that was making eyes at his woman! Bad had been boasting in the local bars that he was going to crack open the head of this guy called Katy if he ever caught up with him.

Old Jake had taken up with Katy because he hated the likes of Bad Stormer and was worried that the younger Katy just might run afoul of him and get the worst of the meeting. Jake had been the one to talk Katy into working the cantalop fields rather than the strawberry fields. The catalop fields lay a bit north of town and along the SP mainline that ran to Ft Worth. He also knew that Bad Stormer's district ended up the line from the catalop fields and that if a guy was to keep to himself he could walk along the line for about two days and get to the little water stop town just outside Bad's district. Here a guy could hop himself a freight going on into Ft Worth and not have to worry about Bad's big club crashing down on a guy's head.

Jake looked over at Katy and said, Sur nuf Katy its de best way to git out o here wid out Bad breathing down yur nek. N jus member ya goter git out ta de water stop n ur safe. *** on Katy let see efin we ken git sum grits n a biskut.

The kitchen was near empty when they walked in but there was a bowl of grits and a platter of biscuts on the table. Both men dug in and ate heartily. Katy packed in some extra and slipped two biscuts into his jeans pockets. He was going to need something extra for that two day walk to the little water stop.

Jake said his goodbye to Katy because he knew that Katy would be on his way out along the mainline today, walking for his life to that little water stop. Katy watched as Jake walked away heading for his job at the grain mill in town. A shiver ran up Katy's back,he was really all alone now and he must start the journey away from the cantalop fields and head north.

He jumped up in the back of the old Ford pickup that was carrying the workers out to the fields.

About midmorning Katy told the foreman he had to take a leak and he be right back. He made his break from the cantalop fields by crawling along the irrigation ditch that ran along side the SP mainline. He crawled till he was well past the edge of the catalop fields and only then did he feel safe to get up and start walking on the coming two day trip.

Sur hope ol Jake was kerect in how fer dis walk is...muttered Katy. N goter membur to git outer site when any ole freight comes rorin by.

Katy had a problem with his vision. Some years earlier he had lost his right eye and that had caused many problems for him. No depth perception and not able to see anyone that might sneak up on his right side.

The day was hot and the sun beat down on the lonely bo as he headed toward his destiny. Each time a train passed he made sure he got under some cover and wasn't spotted. He had heard tales of bo's that were found along this stretch of SP mainline and in each instance their death was attributed to a fall from a passing train even though most had massive damage to their skulls.

When the sun faded and it started to get dark Katy found a good spot under a nice big old cottonwood tree, pulled out one of the biscuts and ate. Sur hope we git there tomurre I'm tard....muttered Katy. And with that he fell into a deep sleep.

Happy Easter everyone! :)

Because I consider you 'bos my friends, I want to announce that I got married on March 27th in Las Vegas, Nevada to a wonderful woman named Lorrie. We have been dating for about two years and have finally taken the plunge. Things have been a bit hectic around here but I am sure that is normal considering the circumstances. My three kids are okay with this and that was my biggest concern. Lorrie was previously married but had no children and has really been great with my kids and is looking forward to this summer when they will be here in Idaho.

When things settle down I hope to spend more time on the forum, in the mean time just know I do care about you San, Tramp, Jackie, Petey, Willie, Stiff, Farmer Bill and Frisco!

Your pal,
