Wouldn't the type of weave used with wool cloth make some difference?A loose weave would let air flow and a tight weave would not?
I think that the thickness of the cloth was variable also.
Of course those southern folks wore clothes made from cotton.
I prefer shirts with a high cotton content because,IMHO,they are cooler than shirts with a lot of synthetic fabric.

They've spent their entire lives in it and are acclimated to it all.

I did not have the benefit(?) of air conditioning until I went off to grad school in in '79. Now I struggle to be without it. My children have never been w/o it except when we are at my place in PA.

Yes, and if I recall correctly, isn't that what killed-off the polyester shirt industry, from back in the 70's ? We were disco-dancin' our selves into sweaty revellers, thinking we were cool and cool in those 100 o/o polyester or nylon shirts, when in actuality t' was the shirts that were adding to our getting overheated. I believe that once folks caught on, those fake light-n-airy shirts were gone. Eh? (I refer you youngin's to the movie Saturday Night Fever, with John Travolta in the "elephant-bells" & polyester shirt(s).)
(Beads were optional.)

Is that the house on the loco to which Wayne is referring?

There are two. The other is almost dead center in the photo (under construction?) on an 0-4-0.

I remember visiting it several times back when it was at the Smithsonian.

I have hopes that SMR will someday import this engine!! And, that car, too!

Wayne,
I see the second one now.
The last of the B&O Camels were most likely built in the 1850.
The one in the photo could be being torn down and the one easiest to see could be one stilloperating.
I can't find a date for last operation for them.

I used to make pilgrimages to Antioch College on my li'l blue Honda 50cc "motorcycle," which took quite a bit of time since even the slightest head-wind made a guy like me slow to 10 or 15mph; yet, I even drove there in the winter, too. During excursions there in the Spring, barefooted but clothed, I used to edge my way along an old log that reached out over the gorge and then hurl myself off into the deep (at that spot) stream below. A long arduous climb back up the cliff-face, with horse flies the size of oxen biting me (us, I went w/ friends) all the way back to the top, only to hurl oursleves off once again, repeated until we were exhausted.

Sometimes, we'd sit in trees or go as guests to classes, "auditing" classes, as it used to be called, and felt we were terribly clever n' all  doing so. 8) The so-called "hippie" culture seemed to be starting , right there and then. The style of clothing and attitude toward such matters as Vietnam was markedly different between the "button-down" culture of my university and that of Antioch, it appeared to me.

I'm pretty sure that that it is just the cab enclosure for that engine - some early engines were built up with a superstructure not unlike a building as they were seen to be just an extension of a stationary engine in a building. And, then again, some were open platforms. The "standard" design that we generally accept for steam engines took some time to arrive.

I thought they might be building a "steam dummy."

Not that kind of dummy.

Steam dummies did not work as intended. The horses were not afraid of the appearance of a locomotive,
but rather the fire breathing dragon sounds it made.
