There were more than 220,000 outages left in the New York area, mostly on Long Island, and about 250,000 in New Jersey.
I’m a little bitter in writing this blog post. I’m at a Starbucks on Long Island, NY, after being dislocated by Hurricane Sandy, with the power to our neighborhood out for more than nine days now. And here I am, watching two guys mess around with an abundant 4 million volts of raw electricity in a seven minute video when I can't even turn the lights on in my living room.--Suzanne Deffree - November 7, 2012

Long Island Power Authority says power should return tomorrow to the 130,000 still without electricity.

Re: Hobo Jungle
Can’t wish everybody a happy Thanksgiving without a nod to Tramp, who started this ‘Hobo Jungle’ Thanksgiving Eve in 2000, fully twelve long years ago. And still it rolls. Weird as this sounds, but for that thread, I may well have missed out on some friendships that I cherish. Who will ever know.
Tramp doesn’t show his face here much anymore. Hell, he rarely even leaves his house. I just happened to get this one shot of him sniffing the air before he ducked back inside.

But that’s OK. It’s a mean world, getting meaner by the month. I would only have hoped that there’d be one more of his yearly ‘free-range turkey’ stories that I loved so well.
Tramp, love you bro, have a happy Thanksgiving, and you take ‘er slow, too.

Dirt,
I agree.Tramp deserves much thanks for bringing this topic here.
I also would like to hear more from him and Daisy.
In the past they contributed quite a bit here.
Always look for their Christmas pictures.

Re: Hobo Jungle
Dirt, That's a very interesting shot of what seems like the upper (north of 72 St.) Westside of Manhattan. I say that because I think I see Riverside Church and Grant's Tomb up there along the ridge; plus, the RR line that will become hidden under structures eventually, running N to S. It's so interesting how all that real estate changed through the years, isn't it. And, do I spy one of the Geo. Washington Bridge's pylons there in the far distance, or would the approx. circa (Would that be a "Hoovervile" there in the foreground?) preclude that, since the bridge was completed when Franklin Roosevelt was governor of NY, I believe; no Westside Highway yet.
Very interesting.

Shoot, Murph, I don't remember where I got it. Just been saving it for a 'good occasion'. Wouldn't be surprised, however, if I got it off of shorpy.

Fascinating to hear you describe the scene. Thanks for that. I believe I see, faintly, the GW bridge itself.

Wish I had 25 bucks everytime I crossed that dang bridge. We could have one hell of a party................

Hevman, if we just had the toll money back for takin' an 18 wheeler across any of the NYC bridges, we could have a hell of a party.

Re: Hobo Jungle
I watched for about 15 minutes, Hev, and only saw a pair of helpers comin' east from Conpit. (Even though downhill from Cresson, they stay on for added braking).
The cam is just to the left of the engine yard and the platform where we took those pictures from. (Remember the infamous roll of film story
).
Anyway, it just shows how slow this economy is. 5 years ago, I could sit here and hear a train comin' east through Freeport on the Conemaugh Line every 15 minutes. The Conemaugh is for overflow traffic on the Pittsburgh Line. Mostly all coal trains, and 1 or 2 manifests per day. Now it's like 1 train every few hours, and sometimes on weekends, nothin' at all.
The Conemaugh ends at Conpit Junction where the coal trains usually pick up helpers to get them up and over, then down into Altoona. The freights usually come through with plenty of power up front to not need helpers. As the EPA keeps shuttin' down the coal mines, the worse it is for the miners and the railroads. Makes me wonder what we're gonna do for power when they don't have an alternate source like nuclear.

It is pretty cool to see what pops up in some of these old pictures. It would be interesting to hear the actual story behind the photo.

Re: Hobo Jungle
Yea Mitch I noticed that too. There wasn't a lot of freights movin' thru. I watched it for an hour and saw 1 container train and the helpers goin' back to Altoona.
I also noticed that out east here where I live the corn syurp, sugar, cooking oil and flour cars are not to plentyful in the rail yard up the street from me. So, ya know something is goin' on.
Sure didn't look like it yesterday with all the nim wits shopping grabbin' them TV's...............
Looks like there is gonna be a lot of credit card debts not being paid...................
