I don't think you are a bad person for not trying to change/teach blockheads Murph.

Somewhere in my past I got the idea it was a sin to try to teach someone something before they were ready to learn.

All true and good to read; yet, there was something dishonest about what he purported, and I feel honesty is something that cannot be taught. It is intrinsic, like empathy (which can't be learned,) present naturally, to varying degrees, or perhaps absent entirely.

Dishonest? I have been calling people who tell us wrong information as fact "Liars." It is true that the Moon appears larger on the horizon but the reason my friend gave is wrong. That makes him a "True Liar."

jlong wrote:Wayne....Nobody deliberately lied to us.

What J. Long says rings true. It was so easy to call people who speak incorrect information, "Liars." Now, thanks to J. Long, I have lost my conviction that they are all liars. (Some still are.)

"You have learned something. That always feels at first as if you had lost something."
--H.G. Wells

I have been calling wrong information lies and those who speak it liars. Yet, the moment I read J. Long's words, I realized my teachers who taught incorrect knowledge were not themselves liars. Even the person who made up the lie about history or physics or what the other candidate said, may not have been deliberately telling an un-truth. So if not a lie, what to call it?

Rufus T. Firefly wrote:People believe what they want to believe...

It is a matter of ego or self-esteem. I am feeling it right now. All those people I have accused of lying... I may have been wrong.

"Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one's self-esteem. That is why young children, before they are aware of their own self-importance, learn so easily. "
--Thomas Szasz

If I accept that nobody deliberately lied to us, then how should I speak of the non-truth tellers? I am working on an answer.

My friend, so convinced of atmospheric magnification, could not admit he was wrong. What to call that? Aha! He lied to himself concerning our measurements so that, in his mind, the lie he told us was not a lie. He is still a liar. Maybe not a deliberate liar, but a liar non-the-less.

I feel better now.

Wayne,

I guess we could all be liars in some ways and things.

I am still struggling with that Roger.

You should have heard the arguments I started by telling my fellow metrologists, "If you are using the value the National Institute of Standards and Technology gave you for your voltage standard, you are using the wrong value." They thought I was lying.

As the literacy rate declines, you’ll ask yourself why the quality of life continues to deteriorate in ways large and small, and in almost every instance the answer will be: because people stopped reading.

Why beat yourself up over this, Wayne? healy posted the comparison pictures, which I take as a direct slur against the Romney/Ryan ticket, but rather than make a post that conflicts or supports, I just posted a link to the videos, which are actually news briefs that were stitched together. By his own admission, not just on the video, but there have been two or three other times when he has slipped and admitted his Muslim faith, makes me feel that he is sympathetic to the Muslim cause, and America be damned. I'm not tryin' to sway your opinion, and you ain't gonna change mine, so let's just let it go.

Doc says it's a very good sign that he'll keep the finger, but he's gonna be in the hospital for at least another week. They must keep the leeches going on the end of his finger 'cause there is no return veins or arteries yet. Blood flow goin' in is good, blood can't get out, is bad. The finger is just held together with wires for now; there is no bone. They won't let him out for the risk of infection, in which case the Doctor says he'll lose the finger clear down into his hand.

For me, this is the most painful injury I've ever had in my life. Any simple movement or a cough makes it feel like my shoulder is gonna explode. (Even the percs and the vicodins barely take the edge off). I see the bone doctor tomorrow morning at 10:30. Then we'll see.

Sorry Mitch, didn't intend to offend anyone. I've been a voting Republican for 37 years...thought it was humorous...

Mitch,

Why is it, when coughing or sneezing causes great pain, one coughes and sneezes more than ever?

I am reminded of coughing and sneezing after my coronary bypass surgery. It took four weeks for my sternum to fuse back together, during which time every cough or sneeze put me in danger of exploding like a suicide bomber. The pain was like being skewered with a burning sword. And like you, pain pills (mine were oxycodone) might as well have been placebos. After trying two, I gave up and did not take anymore.

The good news is it only lasted four weeks. Wishing you a shorter recovery than your doctor's two week prediction.

Sounds like your son is in for a long haul. My prayers for both of you.
