Thanks Berk! Still got a long way to go, but it feels good to make a little progress.

Updated 7/30/2012:

Made a little more progress yesterday.
  • Completed the JPGs for the power shovel's logos - see below. They are on their way to becoming decals.

  • Ordered all 50 hemispherical tank ends from Plastruct as well as a sampling of tank saddles. The tank saddles will be cast because the price for the 125 needed would be astronomical.

How much did they cost? And, how much were you quoted, for the round-ended dowels? What diameter are we talking about, here?

Roy,

These are 3/4" hemispherical ends. They come 5 to a package for $4.00. I needed 10 packages to cover 25 tanks, so the total was $40.00.

Plastruct doesn't give discounts to individuals - architectural firms get them, though.

That's a lot of money, for what you're trying to make. I'd see if there are marbles, ball shot or some other cheap item that could be used. Failing that, you could mold some from plaster of paris or paper mache.

Roy, I agree, but trying to reproduce them might have been more difficult. My thinking was more geared towards substitution - what could I use to duplicate them? And casting the ends didn't occur to me. Even at this late date, I'm not sure how well that could have been done. And the tank ends are going to be very visible and prominent in the model. But "it is what it is".

At least with the tanks, tubes (cylinders) are readily available one way or another (dowels, plastic tubes). I am using cake supports - which are cheap and readily available at AC Moore. The tanks were one of the big ticket items in this model. The other big ticket item is the tank saddle supports (package of 5 for $3.50 x 25 packages = $87.50). I am having those cast.

If you have a vacuum cleaner, it's not that hard to make your own vacuforming tools. Lots of tutorials on the net.

I remember those Mattel Vac-U-Form machines, vaguely. I don't recall that they produced anything that could pass for prototypical, though. And that is the look I'm trying for.

When did Lionel make that?

Roger,

I just found out that this model 6-12751 and the Lionel Crane truck 6-12750 were made in 1989.

And apparently they are re-issues of models made in the early 1960s!

Boy, the things you learn!

Weren't the originals HARNISCHFEGGER(sp?) ? I seem to remember connecting that name with the Lionel models.
