No tequila, Dennis.

Oh dear. Her name was Maria Solidad. Marisol. In 1971, while ecking out an existance at UCSD as an RA and gradual student, I met her (Math department chairman's secretary). A night in old town at Casa de Pico with shots of (then unknown) Cuervo 1800 on the house (she knew the management and every waitress). I set out that evening, picking her up at the family home, thinking I had better bring her back in the more or less the same condition that I found her (she had brothers). She knew all about how to spend (all of) the night in Balboa Park, a few blocks away. Shortly before dawn, she sashayed back into the house with jaunty flair. I pulled around the corner and passed out in my Microbus. To me, she was my future bride. To her, I was a Gringo conquest. Every aproach thereafter elicited a "Te amo, but it can never be..." A pout and retreat. I was in pain.

Dennis,

Hispanic names are tricky. Maria is different from Marisol. She had a sister named Maria Elena (another hot number that plagued me). Lupe is different from Lupita ("little [or young] Lupe", and yet another sister). You need to say the entire name or offense is inferred. They have their own contractions (Marisol for Maria Solidad). I learned the hard way, but that's another story. Maria Solidad more or less means Mary of Solitude, or quiet Mary, which is what mothers sometimes hope for in a child.

At any rate, Tequila and inexperience (I was pretty young to be in graduate school and had just not had a lot of experience with girls since high school due to a lot of study) fogged my vision of things. I think that tequila (and mezcal) go beyond ordinary alcohol. They are psychoactive. I have stayed away since those days and the blackouts ever since.

San, That story was as painful as Bill's prostrate exam, wow. I really don't have any sad stories to share like that unless you count the time my Uncle Biff accidently shot me 16 times while deer hunting.

"Why did you shoot her NINE TIMES!"

"I ran out of bullets."

Thanks, lads, I am a bit better. Fever down, etc. Lack of beer can kill you. I had no idea how serious it can be. Jon, a good flight to you.
