Thank you for the honor of the 20,000th post. It's quite a number if you consider it, but then it's always many miles to the horizon.

The advantage of wide open spaces- you can see the snow-squall approaching...

...which left an inch on the ground by late afternoon yesterday.
14 degrees this morning.

Sh*t.

I've never seen anything like that. Thanks for the treat. Also, how beautiful the contrast is between this photo and those you have shared previously of the valley in full foliage! Seeing such scenes makes me feel insignificant when one considers how the earth just keeps rolling along, visiting each season, w/ life of so many forms coming, blooming, and passing away. I am reminded of what I heard Ted Turner say in an interview recently:
You only have one life; you might as well make it interesting.

Pete, your photos of the nature around your home could make a book. They are really touching and vary from huge to minute in their observation. Well done, buddy. It's been a treat seeing them over these many years.

Appreciate the kind words.
But it's all in the beauty of digital cameras, where I can take 50 pictures to get the one decent one, (and I gotta tell you, it's all by accident. One out of 50 is only pure luck) and then delete the other 49 without incurring the cost of developing film.

The other cool thing is that the camera can be set to gather maximum info, which allows two things- to get a much bigger picture, but also to be able to make a better picture out of a piece of the original. (And, to make things visible that the eye can't see, like the spicules of frost on grass, and perfect reflections in a dew drop).

Here was my first picture of the approaching snow, when it was one hill further away, and it's nothing exciting at all...

Image

... but this piece out of that same picture I find much more interesting, as it highlights a pretty color progression, from peridot to russet to emerald to dark grey, and makes a much better picture, IMHO.

Image

The neat thing about the squall was that as it approached, (and a severe wind was blowing that day), it threw the snow into a vortex, where as much snow was going UP as was coming down! This here (yes, another one  ) shows the vortex more clearly.

Image

So, it ain't quality that's the trick... it's quantity!

Ansel Adams came back with hundreds of bad photos after his trips. Even "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, 1941" was a failed negative. Ansel worked for hours in the dark room to make a print from it and still did not think it worthy. Everyone else loved it. Ansel had an eye for a great photograph, just as you do.

In another thread, Renovo said, in part,

Renovo PRR wrote:First of all the camera never makes the photograph - simply never. That is equal to people who think they can make their golf game by buy the best equipment. It will never happen. Telling a professional photographer their camera takes good photographs it as about as rude as you can ever get.

The photographer can use any and I mean any camera combined with his/her knowledge of light, composition etc and produce a stunning photograph.

Renovo is telling the truth, therefore, you are wrong. It is not the camera or its ability to take hundreds of images. It is you. You have "the eye" for a great photo. Thank you for sharing some of them with us.

Well, but it's nothing you don't have yourself, in spades!

Yupper. ECT. :D And funny stuff, considering recent events here. :D

Gotta say though, the movie version was way overblown for dramatic effect. And it did a great disservice to the treatment modality itself, which can be nothing short of miraculous for those poor unfortunates who don't respond to meds or therapy.

But Nicholson was a hoot!
You ever read the book?

I thought the menacing Nurse Ratchet (loved the poignancy of that name in the plot) was a particularly effective performance - nearly stole the show - nearly, but not wholly. The whole ensemble was fabulous, IMHO.
