Re: Hobo Jungle
OMG.
The finished products are so realistic it's difficult to discern if one is looking at a model or real life in several of those photos. I sure saved that posting, though I doubt it will do me any good. The skills invloved seem beyond what I can do, but I sure will take the lesson(s) to heart and try to learn.
Thank you for posting something so exceptional and inspiring.

Fall and Spring are the best times of year in Tucson.
The site is most interesting Tramp. Thank you. Clicking sub-links ( on the left ) takes one to many interesting pages.

That's what I'm talking about! Not, I hasten to add that I'm in that league but that's the sort of modelling level we got used to in the U.K. and that was back in the 60's when Madder Valley was being built. I remember the articles in Railway Modeller.
I honestly see no reason why any of you here couldn't do likewise, it's not really difficult as such, it simply means being painstaking. In fact many of you, such as Frank and Andre and Jon, are far more painstaking than I! When I see the quality of work being presented in all sorts of fields, the photography, the tractor thread stuff, this is a hell of a resource in terms of the group talents, don't belittle your accomplishments.
Another point is that the resources and materials available here in the US are far greater than whats available in the UK. Many modellers there had to learn to do a lot with a little.
Re: Hobo Jungle
What's up with 1/72 scale? Does anyone else model that scale? Seems like it's between S and HO.

Re: Hobo Jungle
The practice of scratch building goes back to the early days of O Scaling when kits were pretty much non existent and one had to rely on inexpensive handily available material. Sure I love the detail of my Chooch Ent. building fronts, but at 200.00 a pop the cost adds up pretty dramatically when trying to cover real estate. One can really appreciate this type of link.

Ten years ago I tried to convince that arrogant group of wankers on the other forum about this without any success.
Dennis, you should appreciate this viewpoint.

Re: Hobo Jungle
Thanks for those links, Tramp. Beautiful workmanship and informative too. The color one is particularly interesting because I never considered that factor before, which incidentally probably means that the Lionel Santa Fe they provided replacement shells for (damn generously too, I thought) was actually correct for the distance its likely to be viewed from.
Not that I'm a color purist, not a bit of it, I like my liveries bright and colorful but not my scenery, that I prefer to appear realistic.

Tramp:
1/72 is a standard scale for the military model and aircraft model people. Lots of diorama work is done in this scale by these folks, and lots of techniques we're barely aware of.
Take a peek at the IPMS folks' work:

Hope this helps.

Re: Hobo Jungle
I know a few of the IPMS folks in the Hagerstown Md. area, some fantastic modeling being done by those folks.
Weathering techniques so subtle that one really never notices them until they are pointed out. I learned the drybrush and smear from doing gun port streaks.

John Allen explained that to me 45 years ago when I was living in Monterey, CA.
I think many modelers do not understand the concept and even if they do understand, many will still prefer an exact match to prototype color--even if it looks too vivid or bright on the layout. If the model is photographed close up under sunlight they are correct are they not?
And what's a manufacturer to do? If they apply "scale" color instead of "prototype" color, every magazine review and customer will scold them for being inaccurate.
