Hobo Jungle
Re: Hobo Jungle
Murph, the actual picture I was taking is on the previous page, (not that it's worth the effort to go looking).

I saw it, Pete. I was just razzing you, but I had a feeling that by my wording, I'd have been misunderstood
And your pictures are well worth the lookback. In fact, most of them, I have saved, incl. the shiny rails.

It is somewhat humbling to see stuff you played with as a kid in antique stores at outrageous prices, but this guy was pretty cheap. Found this for $10 when my wife and I were out yesterday. Had one when I was a kid, nice to see one again. My kid thinks it's "way coooooool"
I still have the Tonka Gladiator fire truck. Coool stuff!
As for the meeting of the Great Minds of Hoboisim, I had a BALL finally meeting Hev and Dirt. Just too short of a day! Count me in on plans for another.
Won't be making the trip to York, dropped my membership about 7 years ago, too far a trip for the limited amount of stuff I want (Flyer and 2 rail O) Everything else, I can get at my LHS.

I'm not embarrassed in the slightest to say, "Yes, I did!"
I even dug out the old Tonka VW I still have from those days, and we played "Virginians on the Beltway" in the library.

You hobos have probably all seen this, but if you haven't, it's a classic.

I used to play for real too. I don't miss it.
Won't be long before I don't have to play "Marylanders on 15" either.
Then I'll be sane like Bob.

Re: Hobo Jungle
15 is probably a lot nicer drive until you get down to doing the 270 shuffle
but you can cut around a lot of that..
Freakin' beltway is a daily mystery - with all the construction, you never know where they've moved the lanes in the night.
Wasn't much of a problem until it started being dark on the morning commute.

Re: Hobo Jungle
15 is becoming the new 270, whilst 70 to Hagerstown is the new king of linear parking lots; I'll give it a year (perhaps 2) before 15 becomes totally un-navigable. By then, of course, it will be non-germane to me.
Fascinating what a sign-farm Maryland is becoming. So much useless signage that anything with a true message is lost in the forest of "Bridge Ices Before Road Surface" and "Route 15 Safety Corridor" drivvle. Perhaps it's time the Yanks take a lesson from Britain, where I understand they have removed many of the road signs in a wonderfully sane move to unclutter the roads, leaving only those signs that actually help one on his way. I see no need to inform us all that "this highway is dedicated to the late Senator Charles "Mac" Mathius", that I'm stalled in traffic on a "Maryland Scenic Byway", or my existence is somehow more meaningful secure in the knowledge that the road indeed curves to the left as the three separate signposts with yellow and black arrows might indicate.
What wastage of public funds!

It was not all that many years ago that we did not get traffic reports for 70 - only ~45 miles distant and now one goes no where near there after 2pm.

I think you may overestimate competency of the current average driver that is incapable of maintining speed whilst going downhill and a curve to any direction at the same time. I could save millions and clear congestion by just administering a real driver's test to new and old drivers alike. Signs with words (reading? they can actually read??) are close to a total waste - file under obvious, unneeded, and a distraction to all.

Re: Hobo Jungle
If you are so incapable that you can't adjust the wheels with respect to the delta of the curvature of the road without twelve signs telling you beforehand, you should be required by law to turn in your cell-phone.
Re: Hobo Jungle
No, can't turn in my cell phone. I need it for the Magellan interactive map to tell me where I am, where I'm going and to call for help when I get lost anyway. And then, when I get there, to take a photo of where I parked the car so I can find it again. I don't know how people ever survived before cell phones.
