Hey Jon,
Ballasting the center of the track is easier, at least to me, than doing the outside of the track.
Image

I just run a line of ballast down between the rails. I use my finger to spread it along the track. Then I take a small brush and smooth it out, making sure to get all the ballast off the top of the ties. Then I take my spray bottle of wet water and carefully wet it down real good. Really soak it. Then, I take an eye dropper and dribble the half water, half white glue mix, till the ballast is well saturated with it. After it has a couple of hours to dry, I take a wet cloth, usually a old sock over my hand, and with my finger tips, run down the rail heads to get any stray glue off the rails. After it has dried overnight, I go over the track removing any stray grains of ballast that have gotten stuck to the insides of the rails.
Works great for me. Just be real carefull not to get ballast in the point mechanisms.
After the ballast has dried for a couple of days, I take some powdered rust colored chalk and lightly brush it down the rails. Between the rails, I lightly dust it with black chalk to simulate old dripping and stuff like that from under the locos.

The main thing is just don't get carried away with the coloring. Lightly looks better, or at least it does to me.

You may think I’m fooling
For the foolish things I do
You may wonder how come I love you
When you get on my nerves like you do
Well baby, you know you bug me
There ain’t no secret about that
Well come on over here and hug me
And, baby, I’ll spill the facts
Well, honey it ain’t your money
Cause baby I got plenty of that

I love you for your pink cadillac
Crushed velvet seats
Riding in the back, oozing down the street
Waving to the girls
Feeling out of sight
Spending all my money on a saturday night
Honey, I just wonder what you do there in back of your pink cadillac
Pink cadillac

Well now way back in the bible, temptations always come along
There’s always somebody tempting you
Somebody into doing something they know is wrong
Well they tempt you man with silver and they tempt you sir with gold
And they tempt you with the pleasures that the flesh does surely hold
They say eve tempted adam with an apple
Man I ain’t going for that

I know it was her pink cadillac
Crushed velvet seats
Riding in the back, oozing down the street
Waving to the girls
Feeling out of sight
Spending all my money on a saturday night
Honey, I just wonder what you do there in back of your pink cadillac

Now some folks say it’s too big and uses too much gas
Some folks say it’s too old and that it goes too fast
But my love is bigger than a honda, it’s bigger than a subaru
Hey man there’s only one thing and one car that will do
Anyway we don’t have to drive it honey, we can park it out in back
And have a party in your pink cadillac

Feeling a bit exuberant after running the Santa Fe Madison cars. Just beautiful.

"Veranda"?
I bet ol' Jon says 'veranda' too.
Nobody up here yonder says anything other than 'porch'.

And where's this "Steve Llanso" stuff coming from? My extended family's the only 'Llanso' in this country. I'm betting it's my cousin.

And just so people don't think I'm weird or I'm suckin'-up to the hobo...
I'm buying some of Tramp's gorgeous beautiful work. He gave me a great deal on the price. In appreciation, I send my payments with a railroad relic, just to keep it interesting, and believe it or not, I'm still coming out way ahead. And yes, a payment plan!
That hobo has a heart big as New England.
That's what that's all about.

And no crotch-rockets for me. Ain't passenger-friendly. I drive a cruiser. That way, the redhead has a backrest, (and can ride along in comfort), and then I get a backrest too.

But that Ducati sure is purty. Sounds sweet too. Could hear 'er goin' and comin' for blocks away. A sound that makes you stop what you're doing and take a listen.
