I would watch out for that one with the book.

Look at the look in her eyes.

Wayne, how many cars do you have? Have you seen the magazine called The Car Room? Ben and bears? What bears?

Jon, I'm ready today. I think I can take you. Any hobos out there have any pointers for me? I've been training a long time for this, but sometimes training just isn't enough. Jon, shall we say high noon?

Bubble and squeak, Tramp, that's the secret weapon of choice. Should put you in with a good chance of winning.

Thats what I'm having for breakfast along with some eggs, fat sage sausages, thick hickory smoked bacon and eggs plus a pot of Tetleys British mixed with Earl Grey.

Any other 'bo's care to join me?

Mike, I believe the cabbage might be the secret ingredient. I had heard over the years that cabbage was a cure for hangovers. One morning, a particularly desperate morning, I juiced an entire head of cabbage and drank the resulting elixir. Do not try this! Ever!

I am a great fan of Earl Grey tea. Drank it for many years religiously.

Have any of you been bothered by fruit flies? Not on your person but perhaps in your kitchen. I made a fruit fly trap yesterday that worked like a charm.

Bubble and squeak is a traditional English breakfast treat made from leftovers, basically cabbage and mashed potato mixed together and fried. It gets its name from the phenomenon that as cooked the trapped steam from the cabbage (which is mainly water) causes the pancake like mix to lift up and then make a high pitched sound as the steam escapes through the 'bubble'. The trick is to get the bubble and squeak to actually do that. What you need is a heavy skillet, preheated and coated in fat (butter is best) then you put in the mixture so it entirely fills the skillet to the edges and a depth of about 1/4" or more. If not preheated it won't do the trick. Also the mixture needs to brown up pretty fast, usually I start off on HIGH and then lower it to medium or below after ten minutes or so. It takes quite a long time to cook properly so you have to lower the heat after the initial browning.

The mashed potato works best if it isn't too finely mashed or has too much milk in it, a dryish slightly lumpy consistency is better and the cabbage should be shredded or cut into strips and not too soggy.

Even if everything goes wrong it will still taste delicious, you can use brussels sprouts instead of cabbage or even lettuce if all else fails (it cooks like cabbage). Fry till golden brown on the underside or even darker serve with browned side up. Usually I don't turn it over to cook the other side but som people prfer the crunchy outside to the bubble and squeak performance which frankly is a crap shoot, occasionally it works but more often it doesnt.

Hi Tramp, Not to be a buttinski, but :? .....If you drank that much cabbage, you must have had to stay close to home, huh.

In college bio class, we had to mate fruitflies to see if we could cause genetic mutations in a few short generations (their lifespan is 30 days, if I recall.) We sure came up w/ some oddities, like a fly w/ one red eye and one white; flies w/ stumps, not wings. It was gross but fun (mostly for the boys.) You were wise to kill 'em fast, because they are real, real good at multiplying, which is my point here w/ my interjection.

Aaaaah! That were a gradely gut buster so it were. Lots of complaints from the buttons and bows department about the smell "It's awful!" Yes darling offal is exactly what it is. Nothing your average urban warrior needs every now and then but a good big greasy breakfast! Thank yer lucky stars I couldn't lay my hands on some haggis and blood pudding, for some strange reason these upper West Side 'whole food' (I never have seen an incomplete food store) places don't cater to my barbarian tastes though to be fair they do have tripe which is something I've never tried but intend to.

Do 'they' all do it? Who, what, wives I mean, not two months ago the last time I risked life and limb with one of these super saturated breakfast noshes she ate it with every sign of enjoyment and told her friends what a gourmet feast it was and a revelation that anything so plebian could taste so good. Then this morning all I got was an undercurrent of polite disdain - could I boost the hood filter, open a window, turn on some fans, how much longer would the preparation take as "its making me feel ill just to think about you eating it never mind the cooking smells!"

"Yes dear but last time I did this you said you enjoyed it!"

"No, I didn't. You know how much I hate greasy food" Oh of course, my bad, so yesterdays trifle layered with an inch of clotted cream was, of course, low fat? Not to mention the afternoon teas cream puffs or the bags of potato chips? Health foods they were, silly me!

Tramp,

Re: diecast autos.

Forty one out on display. Must be that many stored in their boxes, so about eighty two.

There are a few more I would like to have, but I won't pay the price.

I'll pay that much for a Lionel railroad car, but not a diecast automobile.

I have not seen those magazines.

Regarding breakfast... raisin bran for me this morning... how boring.

Mike,

Your wife came out of the same mold and mine.

Jon, finished the lawn mowing. Cracked my fourth. Slow start but I'll wick it up soon.

Wayne, I'm embarrassed to say I have seven now. There's another company, Exoto, that has produced an amazing Ferrari. It's so detailed that if you press the accelerator, the butterflies in the carb stacks actually open. You might want to check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qApcWCDdec
