Dirt Man Dirt Man............................I was wondering what happen to that Plymouth engine. I remember that runnin' at the Safe Harbor Power Plant when we would fish of the dam....................................









This was a picture of it in 1933 workin' around the plant............................................








This is the Safe Habor Power Plant. Still making electric for the Northeast Corrider. A few years back Pres. Bush was there to promote more Hydro Power Plants.........................









This is the entrance into the plant. This is the Port Road which runs along the river from Enola Pa to Perryville Md. The low grade is on top bridge. This ran from Safe Harbor to Parksburg to loop up with the main line that runs form Phila to Harrisburg. This line is no more. Conrail shut it down in the late 80's. The lower track is what runs to Perryville Md to link up with the Northeast Corrider. NS still use the line today for freight traffic which mostly runs at night..........................










Another picture of a PP&L engine that was used around the Holtwood Power Plant which was a few miles south of Safe Harbor. This engine is at the RailRoad Museum at Strasburg........................

Two of a group of five on the front lawn this AM. Father/son? Bet they won't be hanging together for long, as rutting season approaches.
Had to take the picture through a closed window, or they'd have been gone.

And I know what my cat is thinking.

He's thinking... "I can take them. If those b*stards come an inch closer...."

Twice, an adult deer and three mottled little ones came visiting our yard, with me standing in the yard, not 8' away. I think they like our yard because of the numerous trees. I know they like it for the various shrubs they have been denuding (at least, until I bought the spray that smells like road-kill in a July noon sun ). However, on this occasion, they did not run away. Rather, they looked at me dead-in-the-eyes, as if to say, "Yes, can we help you?" I made no movement because I was fearful they would dart into the nearby traffic and get hit. So, they kept looking around until they were satisfied, it seemed, and left my yard for the neighbor's, making little chirping and snorting sounds as they gradually moved away. When they leap or run, they seem almost to be in slow-motion and not subject to the same laws of gravity as the rest of us.

I just wonder if I should be concerned about deer ticks hanging around after them. We had a cousin become very ill with Lyme disease. She had many deer wander through her yard, too.

A farmer Upstat NY told me once that one of the indicators of a hard winter to come was an early rutting by deer (as well as wasp nests placed high-up around fields, as well as thick-skinned onions. Had you heard that, too?

Murph, I never got within 80 feet, let alone 8, with wild deer like yours and mine. Likely because of the mountain lion in my second picture, with his blood-curdling *meow*.

My kids have fed campground deer out of their hands however, so they can be tamed.

And yes, they are fantastic leapers. They clear the pasture fence with hardly an effort.

Ya got me, on the rural wisdom. The only wasp nest I filetted when mowing my fields this year was very close to the ground, so hopefuly...

I'll bet Hev has heard a bunch of them. Hopefully he'll chime in.

I was standing in the yard with the hose in my hand watering some foliage; maybe,they could smell the water? In fact,I gently placed the hose on the ground - set at a trickle - to let them have a drink if they wanted and gently backed out of the area. Then, we just stood and watched them. When they moved to the backyard, then to a neighbor's yard, we scurried around to the other side of the house where the deer continued to explore and examine the available foliage. The little ones were particularly wonderous to see so close. We didn't make any sudden moves thinking that the adult might do battle w/ us if it seemed we are going to be a threat. One thing's for sure, I don't know if one would call it tame or not, but they sure didn't seem the least bit daunted by our presence, putting their heads down to sniff and nibble, as we stood nearby.

Your attack-kitty must make the difference. The entire attitude in that cat's posture and demeanor is pure kitty-ness. I just love 'em. They have such a good time at life, always ready to have a rockin' good day.

I believe that to be true. I used to have a cat that would stalk the chickens. If a chicken let it get too close the cat would jump on its back, then slide off. The cat would slide off every chicken (5) and then give up until the next day.

I can only imagine what the cat was thinking about failing to catch a chicken every day...

ALL ABOUT BULLS...!!!


My wife and I went to the Denver Stock show and one of the first exhibits

we stopped at was the breeding bulls.

We went up to the first pen and there was a sign attached that said,

'THIS BULL MATED 50 TIMES LAST YEAR. '


My wife playfully nudged me in the ribs, smiled and said,

'He mated 50 times last year. '

We walked to the second pen which had a sign attached that said,

''THIS BULL MATED 150 TIMES LAST YEAR. '



My wife gave me a healthy jab and said, ' WOW, that ' s more than twice a week!

You could learn a lot from him. '

We walked to the third pen and it had a sign attached that said, in capital letters,

'THIS BULL MATED 365 TIMES LAST YEAR. '



My wife was so excited that her elbow nearly broke my ribs,

and said, ' That's once a day.. You could REALLY learn something

from this one. '


I looked at her and said, ' Go over and ask him if it was

with the same old cow. '

Some bulls got the life.

A caseworker with whom I work is the wife of a dairy farmer. Their cows have to be made pregnant on a regular basis to keep producing milk. The have one bull, and about 65 cows. You do the math.

Of course, once he's 'gets off his feed', it's steaks and ground beef, but it's a good gig while it lasts.

Good thing they don't do that to humans after their stud-service years.
All that happened to Hev was he got put out to pasture.
