Thanks guys.
Pure serendipity!

Jon, yes, the Catawissa Railroad was eventually absorbed by the Philadelphia and Reading, (P&R RR), in 1876 or so, and the next station stop after Catawissa was Rupert, where a spur went eastward and dead-ended in Bloomsburg. It's station in Bloom was shared by the Bloomsburg and Sullivan (B&S RR)...

Image

...and the tracks heading out to the right of the next pic...

Image

... are the B&S tracks, which began there, and ended in Jamison City, where the loggers came out of the hills Friday night! So indeed the "Ladies" had to brave all those trestles!

Incidentally, in an amusing footnote to history, most of the hotels in Jamison City aspired to cater to a more upstanding clientele, but the hotel where the 'ladies' plied their trade was called, (honest to God), The Blue Front Hotel. I'll leave it to wiser gentlemen to decide if it was because it was painted blue, or whether 'blue' might have referred to the activities within as being indecent/obscene/risqué, or if it was referring to the color of the logger's jewels come a Friday night!

 :D

I would say it probably was the color of the Logger's jewels. Me being an ex-logger I can vouch for that one....................

Hev, be glad to take you there! Mainville is only some 6-8 miles south of Bloomsburg.

You gotta take a sip of that spring water, too! He said people come to fill up water jugs. it runs 24/7, year round.

And yeah, that guy was as nice as can be. He said he used to try to keep the trees cut, but he couldn't keep up with it. Too bad folks interested in railroad history couldn't keep all the land cleared between the two abutments, so a person could get a clear idea of the scope and enormity of the abutments, the trestle, and the undertaking.

BTW, the guy that now owns the Catawissa station has bought and trucked-in some dozen cabooses, which he rents out. I'll have to take you there, too.

A happy Easter to all. A Birkshire is smoking, a hobo is exploring bridges, a ham is roasting in the South.

Over here on the left coast, it is coolish (by our standards), but it didn't preclude a group single speed mountain bike ride (I flipped my wheel to the freewheeling side for this one; I have not completely lost my mind) in Gonzales Canyon starting in my driveway (trailhead is about 3/4 block away, I am blessed). Good fellowship and sucked down a few Stone brews upon our return. While running trains, of course.

Somehow Jahan relented on the pork issue, and delivered a spiral cut ham, sweet potatoes, some beet greens, and a bunch of other stuff from the local food mongers. I guess I am on for cooking Easter dinner. You know, I love that woman.

We have a great program at our Church tomorrow morning. For us, He is risen after sacrificing Himself for us.

Blessings, San

Pete, I really enjoyed your abutment expose (that word needs one of those diagonal lines over the E, but my box won't make one). Reminded me of many pleasant things, but particularly one wonderful day with my father walking an abandoned rail line. I'm sitting on our porch in the sun drinking the first Easter beer. Got to love holidays.

Jon, did you buy those brass cars I sent you the link to?

Jim, I remember when it was only you, Katy50 and myself in the Club Car Lounge. I noticed you mentioned your early existence on this forum. Happy Easter.

San, glad the hear you're getting your ham. You deserve it.

Tramp, thanks for the link but I had to pass! Too many irons in the fire!! The Empire State Express cars as well as the Super Hudson are on the way as I type. The U.P. 4-8-4 is due in May and I've got a 3rd Rail Yellowstone half paid for. And to top that off I've finally been contacted by a person who has a set of soldiers I've been searching for over 10 years for!!!
The King and Country Black Watch Band at the final review in Hong Kong before handing the island back over to the Commies. Sad.
Image

But hey, I've got the first Easter round! Sam Adams, deviled eggs, and jelly beans!!!!

Happy Easter All!!!!

Jon, what a sublime picture!!
A 'keeper' if I ever saw one!

Me and Leah used you recently, to help her remember states and their capitals.
We were doing that memory-trick of making associations, (Minnesota becomes mini-soda, and poor St. Paul, he got cheesed because he only got a mini-soda), and she knows you're from Mississippi, and Jack being a nickname for Jon, well, another easy one to remember! 8)

Look how lush is your background!
Up here, we only have buds and a promise. :(
