Pete,

You seem a little cranky after sleeping in that wheel barrow last night.

It is not the engineers at fault, it is lawyers and politicians (sometimes one in the same.)

Someone drives with 10 pounds in a tire, the tire blows out, the car rolls over (because they stepped on the brake rather than the gas) and the lawyers are soliciting the passengers in the roll-over as they are being put in the ambulance.

Sue the big fat tire companies, they got the money. Sue the car manufacturer, they new it would roll over in a blow-out situation if the brakes were applied. Big government needs to protect us from ourselves. They legislate safety devices into automobiles so us ignorant citizens won't get hurt no matter how stupid our car maintenance and driving habits are.

That was not me ranting and raving.

I love the vector analysis in these. Step on the brake and the force vector pulls you right off the road.

...Yeah, I can see where they would have a problem. Ummm, why don't you wait until you get
to Texas to have horns mounted? They have the expertise down there to get the job done.

Well, what you say makes perfect sense, of course. However, how could I pass up the chance for all that admiration as I drive across the country? Can't you just see it? I make stops in Maryland, West Virginia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, & Arkansas, for example, at local bars, taverns, 5-star restaurants, diners, and the occasional Justice-of-the-Peace, and folks can see how well those longhorns compliment the streamlined shape of my car. Wow. Just imagine my pride, as I am asked where such a set-up like mine can be obtained. Oh, man-o-man, taste is taste, ya' kno' . Who knows - BMW just might try offering the option themselves, once they git wind of my notoriety. Can't you just picture it?

And by the way, all you owners of Lexus, Nissan, and other cars of similar profile to my Beemer, remember, this forum is witness to where such an eleeegaaant idear first reared its head...er....horns.

Mitch, thanks. You are a good writer. It might be your ticket to making some extra money. I only receive a few hundred a column, but it pays the day's beer. I could give you the only two secrets you need to know to write a publishable column. Not free, of course, but I'll do for 35% of what you earn. Deal?

So, when the VW dealer returned D's car with pressures at 30 psi, they never checked them. The manager tried to convince me that air simply vanished from tires at 20 below 0 never to appear again. And yes, the low-pressure light was on. I had to pump the bastards up with a hand pump in -10 weather. I felt like Pete.

Wayne, thanks. You really do have a unique brain. If you had been a detective, you might have solved a lot of crimes.

Roger, thanks as well.

Murph, I need to see more pictures of your fantastic model pike.

Pete much of this came about from the Ford/Firestone fiasco and law suits. Back in those days, Ford was calling for only 27 psi in the tires on their full sized Broncos and Bronco IIs. The reason, in my opinion, was for ride quality. (Ever notice how well some Fords ride)? Radial tires work in the sidewalls, whereas a bias-plyed tire works longitudinally in the tread area. Because of the radial design, the lower the psi in the tire, the softer the ride, but at the same time, the bigger the footprint is on the road (to a point). A low radial tire can be compared to a loose electrical connection. They both generate heat, and in both cases are detrimental to the design characteristics. And third, radials react much quicker than a bias-ply tire, and when low on air, react even faster, but the sidewall can collapse. Although Ford took the heat for rollovers, they were not alone. The shorter the wheelbase on the vehicle, the more susceptible to rollover in a quick maneuver. Jeep Wranglers & Liberties, Suzukii Samurai, and like built miniature SUVs are all candidates for quick maneuver rollover. Notice how wide the wheelbase is on new Wranglers.

Mitch, BTW, that post about letting the truck drive itself while you loaded bales was awesome.

You're a GD good writer!

Writing truth is easy, Pete, it's the friggin' fiction I have trouble with.

While we're on the topic of hay bailin' and farms.........

A farmer had a wife who nagged him unmercifully. From
morning till night (and sometimes later), she was always
complaining about something. The only time he got any
relief was when he was out plowing with his old mule.
He tried to plow a lot.

One day, when he was out plowing, his wife brought him
lunch in the field. He drove the old mule into the shade,
sat down on a stump, and began to eat his lunch.
Immediately, his wife began haranguing him again.
Complain, nag, nag; it just went on and on.

All of a sudden, the old mule lashed out with both hind
feet; caught her smack in the back of the head.
Killed her dead on the spot.

At the funeral several days later, the minister noticed
something rather odd. When a woman mourner would
approach the old farmer, he would listen for a minute,
then nod his head in agreement; but when a man mourner
approached him, he would listen for a minute, then shake
his head in disagreement.

This was so consistent, the minister decided to ask the
farmer about it. So after the funeral, the minister spoke to
the farmer, and asked him why he nodded his head and
agreed with the women, but always shook his head and
disagreed with all the men.

The farmer said, "Well, the women would come up and say
something about how nice my wife looked, or how pretty her
dress was, so I'd nod my head in agreement."

"And what about the men?" the minister asked.

"They wanted to know if the mule was for sale."
