Hobo Jungle
Re: Hobo Jungle
Correct, Pete! She's an anthracite burner built at the Alco/Schenectady shops for pusher service in central and eastern Pennsylvania. They were commonly referred to as Mother Hubbard's! My layout wouldn't be complete without a camel back.. and if you gotta go camel back.. make it the ugliest there was!!!

Shame on you ALL!!!! THIS is a "big butt!!!!!!
And yes it's ugly!!!

MY engine on the other hand, consists of a large classic Wooten designed firebox!!!! Capable of producing 90,000 lbs of tractive effort.

PS: Here's the L1's nickname Pete:

PS: Here's the L1's nickname Pete:
"The L1 obtained the nickname "Angus-type" as a result of noted railroad operations writer Angus Sinclair's comments that the L1 would dry up all the country's canals and make all forms of water transportation obsolete thanks to the engine's incredible thirst. Because only three L1 locomotives were constructed, Sinclair's comments never rang true but the engine did establish the use of Mallet type engines beyond narrow gauge light duty use."

Thanks, Jon. it IS an interesting design. Developed by a guy who worked for the P&R.
Must have been odd for the fireman and engineer, when it would seem like they would have no communication between them unless there was some rudimentary intercom. Also, it doesn't look like there's much ROOM for the fireman back there, or protection, if your model is true to the real thing.
I see that wide firebox used two firedoors, too. Would have been a bitch to get coal into the corners with only one door!
Looks like it also left the control of the injectors and the vigilance on the sight-glasses entirely up to the fireman. I wonder how many engineers felt completely comfortable with THAT arrangement! Seemed like it would require a huge level of trust.

AND speaking of butts that are not on livetock or engines, can somebody tell me, why does any woman let her part-that-went-over-the-fence-last get so prodigious (not that there aren't men who have let theselves go, too)? Huh? Wha' ? I mean, there is a limit, isn't there?

Re: Hobo Jungle
Pete, with nothing but a shovel to feed coal to that immense grate plus being exposed to the elements under that pathetic roof was nothing short of incredible!!!! It's amazing they served the Erie for almost 14 years before being rebuilt into 2-8-8-2 rear cab compound Mallets.
Looking at the back head on the model it's nice but also looks like it could be a fun detailing project. I'd love to get my hands on an actual Erie back head photo and add the necessary brass piping, spigots, cut-off valves, industrial green paint and whatever else can be obtained from brass detail manufacturers. Any leads would be appreciated!!

A man with a mission. I suspect a backhead photo of Erie 2600 will be hard to find.
Today, at least three of these camelbacks remain preserved around the country although none are as large as 2600.

Maybe contact Scott M??? Probably has pictures that go beyond the level that they manufactured at for this model.
Precision Scale for detail parts....
If someone throws a stone at you, throw a flower at them. Remember to throw the flower pot with it.
Re: Hobo Jungle
Rufus, Lately Scott's had so many irons in the fire I hated to bother him with a request. However, I sent him an email earlier and hopefully he'll reply. I'll keep you all posted! Thanks for the heads up on Precision Scale! Didn't a person by the name of Harry Heike of Eagles Nest(?) used to do some awesome detail work like that?
