I did, almost, but you know what "they say" about assumptions. And out of respect, I sure didn't want to assume no offense had been taken. Any-ol-ways, ya'had me goin' there for a moment, actually making me speechless; that is, I tried to say something clever and witty but nothing came to mind. I tried again. Still nothing. I didn't want to sound flippant, so I thought it best to shut up.

So now we know why the troops on hand near Bengazi were ordered to stand down, and why General Hamn, when he decided to disobey orders and go to the rescue, was relieved of his command within 30 seconds of making the decision. It was United States Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta who ordered General Carter Ham (not Hamn) to stand down. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich appeared on ABC News and suggested that Panetta may have disobeyed Obama's direct order to send in military help to the American consulate in Libya. It would be no fun if it were otherwise. I am reminded of the time a friend told me the Moon appears larger on the horizon due to atmospheric refraction magnifying it. I told him it was an illusion created in the brain and in fact the Moon appears larger overhead than on the horizon because it is a half Earth diameter closer overhead. His argument started with, "Everybody knows..." (How many times I have heard that?) My response was, "Everybody is wrong."

We went outside at sunset with a Wild Theodolite and measured the Moon diameter, Angle Moon Rise: 0° 32' 56"

At midnight we went out and measured the Moon diameter again, Angle Midnight: 0° 33' 33"

Next evening I overheard my friend telling people we had measured the Moon and proved atmospheric refraction is what makes it appear larger at moonrise. I pulled him aside and showed him the notes we had taken the night before. His response was, "We must have transposed the numbers." I decided he deserved to keep his wrong beliefs and let it go.
