A cheap antidepressant reduced the need for hospitalization among high-risk adults with COVID-19 in a study hunting for existing drugs that could be repurposed to treat coronavirus.
Researchers tested the pill used for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder because it was known to reduce inflammation and looked promising in smaller studies.
They've shared the results with the U.S. National Institutes of Health, which publishes treatment guidelines, and they hope for a World Health Organization recommendation.
“If WHO recommends this, you will see it widely taken up,” said study co-author Dr. Edward Mills of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, adding that many poor nations have the drug readily available. “We hope it will lead to a lot of lives saved.”
The pill, called fluvoxamine, would cost $4 for a course of COVID-19 treatment. By comparison, antibody IV treatments cost about $2,000 and Merck's experimental antiviral pill for COVID-19 is about $700 per course. Some experts predict various treatments eventually will be used in combination to fight the coronavirus.

That seems not to be a really big difference; serotonin target drug for treating OCD, too. Seems odd; might have to get that Lancet paper.....wonder about mechanism of action.

One of the auctions i go to. Has a Russian secretary with 2 bad fingers. She claims “ that her covid booster cured her Dupuytren’s condition “. I spoke with her in person last week. I can tell you “ her fingers are no longer bent 90 degrees to her palm. “ vaccines or not. Her 2 bad fingers move. She has a few appointments scheduled with Doctors in Hartford CT. To look into it.

I'd rather see them use case numbers. If something is up 50 percent it might not be all that bad. f you have 2 case on Monday. then 3 on Tuesday. Big deal. If you have 10,000 then 15,000 now we're having a problem.

It would be interesting to know what vaccine she got. My guess would be Moderna.

OneAmerica is a $100 billion insurance company that has had its headquarters in Indianapolis since 1877. The company has approximately 2,400 employees and sells life insurance, including group life insurance to employers in the state.

The death rate is up for all age groups, but people over 65 and under 18 almost never have life insurance so that wouldn't be reflected in their data. Several hundred children have died in the current USA pandemic that would have, at least statistically, been alive except for COVID-19. Obviously the death rate for older individuals, particularly those in their 60s and older, is through the roof due to COVID-19. For those interested, the current deaths are almost exclusively among the unvaccinated. Vaccination isn't perfect, but it is very effective at preventing hospitalization and death. Not the Black Death of the 1300s but still pretty dreadful.

According to that link the deaths and sickness are caused by other…..ie illnesses or ailments. Probably from lockdowns and mandates causing mental illness, substance abuse not to mention trying to make ends meet in this highly inflated economy. Suicide and homicide are probably way up….no surprise with Joey the Dunce and the Democrats at the helm.

Just 8.9% of ICU beds are available at hospitals in the state, a low for the year, and lower than at any time during the pandemic. But the majority of ICU beds are not taken up by COVID-19 patients – just 37% are, while 54% of the ICU beds are being occupied by people with other illnesses or conditions.
