OTOH, I take a bit of comfort from this:
Otto von Bismarck — ‘God has a special providence for fools, drunkards, and the United States of America.’

How'd that work out for Otto?

I am not sure that is the correct quote. It might be "There is a Providence that protects idiots, drunkards, children and the United States of America."

And since Otto von Bismarck died in 1898 the quote is over a hundred years old a better question might be how did it work out for the United States of America.

Apparently failed for Otto and others of his ilk.

Seems to be working well for the idiots and drunkards.

Just another sign of civilizational decadence. Historical ignorance.

Well, we are very steadily working our way towards a total collapse unparalleled since the fall of the Roman Empire

I would be interested in your take on how the collapse will take place and what will be the major cause ?

Pretty much the same reasons as then - just repeating history.

While I do believe the United States will collapse from within I don't see us on a parallel path with the collapse of the Roman Empire.

Yes, it might be worse.

Retrieved the quote from the intarwebz. Argue with that/them.
The US of A survived The Spanish-American war, WWI, the Great Depression, Roosevelt (TBD), WWII, Korea, VietNam, Iraq &c. You may well argue how good our survival was, but there it is.

Dunno how, but see my tag line from John Adams for major cause: are we still a moral & religious people?

The Roman Empire did indeed collapse from within. The externality came later & finished it off. While the "elites" comforted themselves that they were above it all.

Were we ever? Really? This country wants to believe it was, but there's a lot of convenient mythology in those teachings

It's odd since the Constitution was written doing their very level best to avoid writing in anything where a religious faction might have any input having already seen the evils 1st hand that such might have if incorporated into a government with Joseph Priestley being a major influence on Madison to that very effect. 1st 5 presidents were Episcopalians/Deists or Unitarians (John Adams, oddly enough, as was his son). Jackson was a Presbyterian and all know what those mad buggers are like :!:

We have Elites? Are you referring to the mythical and magical all-powerful 1% that are our great benefactors and protectors of our way of life?

True enough, but that misses the point. In the 18th Century, and before & after there was an understood ethos of morality, even if seldom observed. "We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep and there is no health in us"

The abuses of state religion, in particular, were well understood and were avoided. The Founders generation were the recipients of the Enlightenment with all that rationality thing...that culminated in the French Revolution. Nevertheless, the ultimate luminary George Washington invoked and thanked Divine Providence throughout his life (although an Episcopalian, he never took Communion). So something transcendental was acknowledged and morality was a thing known.
The Unitarians of the 18th Century were nothing like the squalid sect operating today.
Not grokking your comment about Presbyterians.
