Against my better judgement, I went to see Midway. I set the bar low and it didn't disappoint - even the CGI was terrible. I felt like I was watching a war movie version of The Natural - it packed nearly every topical cliche one can imagine.

Ford vs. Ferrari opens on Friday - hoping that's a bit better.

Predictable and sad.

One can hope but a movie that's as heavily advertised as this one tends to indicate desperation to recoup the studio's investment in a movie that's going to a streaming service in the immediate future.

I wouldn't want to be in the position to decide which movies are to be made, having no definitive idea what actually interests America, let alone the planet, and wants to see. I have always thought science fiction was a favorite, if not the top favorite. Yet, "To Kill A Mockingbird" is still among my top favorites; its theatrical production in NYC has been running for quite some time now with never a single seat empty at any performance. :D

I watched "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" last night and liked it, yet the story was just a standard old Hollywood story in a SF setting.

Sadly, those that need to see this production are not the ones attending.

Yes. It was the assignment of the novel by one of my literature professors in under-grad school which got me hooked. I read it in one weekend and liked is so much that I read it a second time the following weekend, not wanting to have missed anything.

And when the wonderful movie of it, with Gregory Peck as Atticus, so perfectly (and literally) fleshed-out the whole story and, certainly, the characters so well, anytime since then that I have had to think of the story, it is that movie's interpretation which I see (happily and gratefully) in my mind's eye.

To me, the casting was flawless. Absolutely every single character seemed to be played by its "real-life" character. I've often wondered if Robert Duvall's' part in the movie helped jump-start his career, big time.

Murph,
Believe it or not, my experience with it was the same. Read the book first.

The film makers are hyping the film to get some Academy award buzz and to try to find the right market for potential moviegoers. It's not a romcom or an action thriller per se. It's actually more of a bio pick about the interplay between Shelby/Miles/Ford/Ferrari (later two are actually the principals of their respective companies and not the companies themselves).

I took the Impala in for routine service and saw a video clip/review of the film on the morning news show in Detroit included footage of the current Ford heir (William Clay Ford Jr.) at the LA Premiere on Monday. There were also a couple of gear head mags in the waiting room with reviews of the film. The reviews have been quite positive. Looking forward to seeing it tomorrow or Saturday.

Racing movies. Love 'em. The accompanying stories usually suck, but I don't care. It's the cars at speed.
Back in 1970 my two brothers, my 10-year-old son and I went to the six-hour enduro+Can-Am at Watkins Glen (an experience never to be missed, at least once). That year, the race organization was, shall we say, a bit lax. Anyway, after the first race (won by an Alfa Romeo Type 33) we charged across the track to pit row to fawn over the cars. I still think that Alfa was the loveliest car ever. On Sunday we infested pit row to fawn over the mix of Group Six and Can-Am cars. In those days, the inevitable winner was the brilliant orange McLaren car with its great honking Chevrolet motor. Good times, good times. Been a fan ever since, although today's cars look more like grounded space ships.
The LeMans-winning GT-40 was special. The car was a development of Eric Broadly's (sp?) Lola design, with a Ford motor. Anyway, there's an outfit that builds quasi-civilized replicas. You can buy one if you sell your first born or your brass loco collection ( )
