A brand spankin' new war movie, MIDWAY, will open on November 8th, and I can't wait! With modern special effects, according to the trailer, it's just gonna be awesome. The last movie I went to in a movie house was "A Few Good Men". When the hell was that? Early '90s? :?: I've watched the original Midway on TV at least a dozen times.

Only problem with new CGI and special effects in war movies is it almost brings you too close to the reality. The beach scene in Saving Private Ryan was incredibly intense and sad. Really brought home the horrors of war and waste of life and changed how war movies were filmed IMHO. I guess it depends on how they film it and tell the story. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good war movie, but tend to enjoy the old fashion movies (B/W) even though I know they are sugar coated.

Band Of Brothers is a great modern telling of a WWII movie. We have the DVD series and watch it every couple of years.

Not only that, but they also get used to create alternate realities as opposed to what might have actually happened to sell another ticket and fill another seat before shuffling it off to streaming services.

Exactly! There have been so many movies of WWII and many documentaries, so its hard to believe there's anything new to say......except to jazz it up with CGI and gratuitous sex, which seems to be expected these days.

Regarding a different war, I have a lifelong hometown friend who is writing a novel and who has asked me to edit and proof-read it for him. He was a soldier in Vietnam. Is there anything else to say about Vietnam? There have been several movies (which totally absorbed me: Full Metal Jacket; Platoon; The Deer Hunter; Apocalypse Now; Good Morning, Vietnam; Born on the Fourth of July; Forrest Gump, on the subject) which have been "definitive" as far as I am concerned, but I have no real-life idea since I was not there.

I've advised him that his personal viewpoint, based on his experiences, may still be interesting to others. However, I really do not know for sure.

Seems a fair summation right there.

Thank you, Rufus. That has been the route I have chosen, for a while, now, but vignettes from those movies keep popping into my head as I read his work, and that makes me wonder if it is the movies I am seeing in my head or new images created by his hand.

I don't want to simply be his cheerleader, though I do try to cheer him onward; however, I want to advise him with honesty and clarity as he proceeds on his mission to speak.

I would say "Chariots of Fire." Great film about sports, human endurance, love of various types. Wonderful music, perhaps in the top few in history.

For comedy, any of Woody Allen's early films. Bananas, for example.
Also anything Mel Brooks: Young Frankenstein, Space Balls, History of the World Part 1, Blazing Saddles.

For history and novel adaptions, hard to beat Barry Lyndon, one of Kubrick's best, with excellent music from historical sources.

For serious contemplation of reality, anything by Ingmar Bergman, Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Scenes from a Marriage.

Saw a movie the other morning (odd time for this to be on...) that I have always liked albeit not for everyone by any measure:

Flesh and Blood

Yes, that one,

I also liked Hauer in "Blood of Heroes"

And, in "Bladerunner".
