I'm a little late to the party here, but Midway is one of my favorites too. So ask yourselves a few questions. $100 million remake? If you were an investor, who is the target audience going to be. My guess is if you stopped 100 people out on the street and asked them about the battle of Midway, 96 of them would look at you like a deer in the headlights. We don't teach history anymore, and if it is taught, it is altered in ways to make us look like the bad guys. Investors could lose their aZZ. Older military people, particularly Navy and Marines will know, and possibly many WWII era folks, but there just ain't a whole lot of them left. I'm bettin' this remake would be a dog, relegated to the B movie bin, and out on DVD in less than 60 days.

Are we talking about the Charlton Heston, Hal Holbrook version? It seemed to cover the codebreaking that went on at the time, and our bomber's luck in finding the Japanese carriers when they did.

One story from WWII that could stand to be told, is how our torpedoes just didn't work, and how our ordnance people denied there was a problem. It took us two years to get the necessary changes made. We shot lots of torpedoes at the Japanese carriers at Midway. None went off.

Yeah, it was Heston, Hal Holbrook, Henry Fonda as Nimitz, Robert Mitchum as Halsey, Glenn Ford, and other notables in an all-star cast.

Early in the war, there was a group of Admirals that commanded fleets all over the world, and they believed in the Naval Orthodox of the magnetic exploder on the torpedoes. These "Old Guard" admirals were referred to by the rest of the Navy as the "Gun Club". They continuously blamed submarine captains for missing their targets, even though the crew tracked the torpedoes straight to the target. (Indeed, after the war it was confirmed by the Japanese that some torpedoes went right through their ships without exploding, causing minor damage with a little hole that damage control parties could patch up immediately).
The theory of the magnetic exploder was that a moving ship created a field, and when the torpedo crossed the field directly under the ship, it would explode. Since the ship is basically hollow in the bowels, and since you cannot compress a liquid to any measurable degree, all the force of the explosion would be directed upwards, breaking the keel and sinking the ship. But submarine crews, (after much bitchin', even to the press), finally got the Navy to conduct tests. They found that torpedoes constantly ran much deeper than their set depths, and they went to work to correct that. And submarine crews, (while at sea), took exploder mechanisms apart and found that you couldn't unseat the firing mechanism with a 4lb. sledge hammer. They made their own corrections and some of the subs started comin' back to Pearl with six or seven sinkings under their belts. Eventually, the Old Guard gave up on the magnetic exploders, and all torpedoes were set for contact explosions. By the end of '44, the Japanese barely had any shipping left, which contributed greatly to the end of the war.

I think you have the fixins for a good movie, there. Another good story is that of the B-29. We spent more on the B-29, than on the atomic bomb. Unfortunately, we couldn't hit the broad side of Japan from the design altitude. General LeMay ordered them to strike from a much lower altitude, and they did a pretty good job.

There's one channel on TV that for the entire month of October has been running creepy, blood and gore, mysterious, and scare the crap out of ya movies, simply because of Halloween. I rarely ever watched crap like that. Never saw the Exorsist, pay no attention at all to Sci-Fi, none of that stuff. I will admit though, as a youngster, I would watch Chiller Theater with host Chilly Billy Cardille. :) Came on at 11:30 PM after the news on Saturday nights. Thankfully, October is over. Now to steal all the candy from the grandkids. Especially those Snickers bars.

Regarding Snickers bars, we offered Trick-or-treaters their choice of three candy bars, arranged in a tall basket into which they could reach to make their selection: Twix; KitKat; Snickers. Not one child reached for the Snickers, preferring the Twix most often . I was surprised. Sort of .

She got off cheap. Who'da thunk Death likes Snickers? You could have any goody you want - but Death goes for plain Snickers.

Do you know that Dari-Queen dropped the Snickers Blizzard about a year or more ago? I haven't been back since, but my wife did bring me home a banana splits blizzard once. :)

Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?
https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/ar ... on/534198/

More comfortable online than out partying, post-Millennials are safer, physically, than adolescents have ever been. But they’re on the brink of a mental-health crisis.

The advent of the smartphone and its cousin the tablet was followed quickly by hand-wringing about the deleterious effects of “screen time.” But the impact of these devices has not been fully appreciated, and goes far beyond the usual concerns about curtailed attention spans. The arrival of the smartphone has radically changed every aspect of teenagers’ lives, from the nature of their social interactions to their mental health. These changes have affected young people in every corner of the nation and in every type of household. The trends appear among teens poor and rich; of every ethnic background; in cities, suburbs, and small towns. Where there are cell towers, there are teens living their lives on their smartphone.

Psychologically, however, they are more vulnerable than Millennials were: Rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011. It’s not an exaggeration to describe iGen as being on the brink of the worst mental-health crisis in decades. Much of this deterioration can be traced to their phones.

1) I fondly recall a very similar argument being promoted regarding the watching of television by the youth of America.......in the 60's, 70's. 80's......

2) These adolescents have parents -- perhaps they could actually take on some of the responsibilities of parenting?

3) I see adults that are incapable of putting their smartphones down (some have multiple phones!); it's not limited to adolescents.

4) There is a lot of hand-wringing here...........
