These are the cable cars that run between the Treasure Island and Mirage hotels in Las Vegas:

I like their conventional streetcar lines. I think it might be cool to see some old-fashioned streetcars or interurbans running on modern light rail routes. They don't have to be actual vintage equipment, but could be modern cars carefully and thoroughly fashioned to look old, yet have all the modern safety and comfort features.

Some old trams:

Brixton cable grip. Unfortunately, little of the trailer is visible.

I was drawn to this by its interesting truck placement. Also note the advertisement on the spiral staircase.

Street cars were replaced in my home area @ 1946 by buses. The buses were mostly new with nicer seats and warmer in the winter.
But the thing I missed most was the ozone smell from the street cars. The smell of diesel engines have never replaced ozone.
The change-over was a gradual thing. I remember riding buses earlier in the 1940s and thought they were pretty cool the first several times.
Then I started missing things. The clang of the warning bell could not be rep;aced by a horn. Acceleration of the trolley was much quicker.
Even going through towns it seemed as if the trolley was given precedence through traffic. Cars and pedestrians got out of trolley
right 0f way. The motorman actually seemed to have an easier job than the driver of the bus.
Savannah, GA ran what was referred to as a trolley on River Street for a while. I do not know if is still in use. Just because it sort of looked
like a trolley didn't make it one. It was powered by an engine that ran on vegetable oil. The smell of french fries doesn't replace ozone.
Savannah also has many small tour buses that are called trolleys. Oh well.

I wonder. Did the trolley men (called "motor men?) need licenses to operate them? And if so, did that license translate right over to driving buses? I imagine not, right?

If we're talking those small "buses" that are sort-of styled to look like trolleys, they also run in uptown Whittier. Yuck. Abominations.

I don't know about licenses, but horsecar drivers were certainly not equipped to operate cable cars. In fact, there were so many differences in grips(some were wheels, some were levers), I'm sure you had to be retrained moving from one cable line to another. And, I can't imagine a gripman just naturally having the chops to run a trolley.

Thinking about it, a motorman would definitely need more training just to be a trolley bus driver. He'd probably need a special drivers license from the DMV.

I know I've posted Lisbon trams before, but I couldn't resist this fully-plated car:

I'm surprised at the condition of the walls of the buildings, the exposed wires, and the graffiti. No wonder they made the car's shell so slick, I suppose, anticipating some smartasses marking-up the cars as they traveled by, huh. Somehow, that li'l bugger is good looking, though, to me, at least.

1894 photo of the New York City Post Office at Broadway and Park Row, which was torn down in 1939. In 1894, it was still served by horse cars:
