Actually, Pete got my joke. A diesel does need some hose water for the radiator on occasion, but the water from a steam water tower would pretty much ruin the engine by cracking the hot cylinders, etc. RS-1s were notorious for running too hot anyway. My second RS-1 in the fleet has the top vents open. Made a lash-up work yesterday for the first time. Not so easy for me to figure out.

I'll send Jon a double-header movie. The second Rs-1 is equipped for passenger service.

I've heard it stated that we Americans who have been employed our whole lives do not know how to relax or retire, that we even work at vacationing, constantly lugging (as in "luggage") things around, from trailers and boats, to umbrellas, tents, fishing gear, and of course, the ever-present suitcase (not usually for suits). yyeeeeeeeegods, when does it stop!) Men in particular just can't go and sit down (!) due often to some needy female dependent coming up with a new absolutely necessary next-assignment. Some men even assign themselves work, such as yard work, tree trimming, and gardening, anything involving work/effort instead of rest and relaxation. Then men wonder why there are more widows in the country than widowers. ( !!!!!!!! )
Anybody agree? If not, good for you! Apparently, you have been self-emancipated from the need to do.

Some truth to that - takes me 3-4 days so ramp down when on vacation to actually relax - I have gotten better since I disconnect fully from the office when not there now.

That is a real problem and I have made it clear that very little more will be tolerated from that department pertaining to the current primary residence. Once done, it's done....

Actually, some of that is relaxing -- I look forward to being outside away from the rest of the noise; chill in the air and it's time to split wood for the fireplace - almost a Zen activity for me that also serves as my health club while providing a warm evening on a winter's day.

Need? Well, we just had new tile installed in the kitchen. Yes I could have done that myself but my better half decided to save my knees. We found out once again, that not only could I have done this, but I could have done it better......

Obviously I can't speak for Rufus, but I "retired" late 2013 at 66 and have been busier than a one armed paper hanger ever since. Some health/family issues haven't helped, but I don't ever see being bored. If I had enough money to do all the things I like to do, I could have retired at 35. Work is way over-rated. My advice would be to retire as soon as possible, unless you absolutely LOVE your job.

Same here, but I know a number of guys struggling with retirement. These are folks who lived for work, had little else in their lives. Now that their professional work-life has ended they are lost. They never took the time to cultivate outside interests.

I "retired" two years ago at 58. Even at that age the actuarial tables indicated it was unlikely I'd get everything done I had on my post-retirement list. My best friend pulled up with pancreatic cancer and died this past February...he was 60. If there had ever been any doubt as to whether I'd done the right thing that pretty much sealed it for me.

I got a call from a former associate recently that had just retired. We had worked together on and off for quite a few years. When I decided to jump off he had expressed concern about doing the same. Now he was nine days in and had started calling around looking for stuff to do. Just miserable...

Best thing for a bored retired guy is to drive a school bus. Around here they get $24.00 an hour,work half a day and have summers off. If you work for first student they pay unemployment during summer months. ($6,000)

The idea was to exchange stories and poems about trains.


Instead it has become nothing but whining, whining, whining and adolescent humor which is basically disgusting.



My comment was in jest as a wake up call.
