Yes, white pegboard (masonite). I got it from Lowe's.

Thanks - Lowes! I need to get a sheet or 3 for my place in PA.

Updated 8/5/2017:

The new track lighting has been installed in the workshop and the train room! :!:

Good shot of my pegboard getting utilized as well.

The final number and position of heads, as well as type of LED bulb (I currently favor 4100K) will be determined after the backdrop is installed. That will give me something to evaluate lighting choices against.

This is a major step forward! :D

You need more file handles.

Updated 8/9/2017:

Just a few random thoughts, ramblings, and updates.
  • While the train room is in pretty good shape, the workshop is lagging the play a bit. I've still got tools to hang on the pegboard, equipment to move downstairs from the garage, modeling supplies to get onto shelves, and books / software to get onto the bookshelves.
  • I've decided that I am moving the house-related supplies and materials (wall anchors, hooks, repair items, wall plates, old TV coax cables, etc.) into labeled bins and storing them in the closet or attic. This stuff will be rarely used and it doesn't need to take up space in the workshop.
  • I have re-worked the RR-Track plan to plan (in detail) the Staging Area benchwork. This will be the first area constructed. Once it is in place, the backdrop will go in place. It's due to be photographed in early October.
  • I've located a source for the good plywood I want to use on the layout. Will probably place a small order in the next 1-2 weeks just for the Staging Area.
  • Will also start thinking about what track and switches are needed for Staging. That will get ordered in time for pickup at York.
  • I'm looking forward to next week's Steel Mill Modelers Meet in Bethlehem. Should be enlightening and directly applicable to the Weirton museum layout.

That's the current thinking.

Sounds like a good initial plan. What kind of 'good' plywood are you planning on using? I used 3/4" fir interior/exterior grade on mine, which I know is a bit overkill. However I can stand on it, which is no mean feat if you could see me, lol.

I got the York paperwork in the mail the other day...can't believe it's rolling around again already. I was thinking of taking a pass this time around, but October is usually the better of the two.. I still have a mountain of crap I brought home from the last three or four. Despite my best intentions I always find something that winds up on the project pile.

Anyway, the train-room looks great. Kinda sterile right now, but it'll get filled in no time...

I'm looking at a South American 5 ply wood from Arauco. A friend (whose layout I designed) used it. He came up with a bracing for it that allows him (240 lbs) to stand on it without problem. The wood itself is impressive. Very sturdy and beautiful.

The 19/32" 5-ply sheet is my first choice. I also like the 23/32" because it is a 7 ply, but it weighs 62 lbs a sheet. That will be a real PITA to muscle down a flight of stairs and over a stair rail. I'm still mulling that one over. I do plan to stand on this layout.

I'm fighting the urge to start on the bench work before getting the workshop straightened out. Been there, done that. I'm going to be patient.

I've always found the concept of "open benchwork" intriguing as it provides far more topographic variability, allowing depressions as well as hills, etc. Of course that kills the possibility of walking around on it. A friend of mine used it on his around-the-room shelf HO layout, which I guess would be the optimal configuration for its use.

I am actually considering a combination of the two. The table top method would be used for the staging area. The open benchwork would be used for the long approach (WV side) to the bridge as it would allow the track to be built on fill - a Pennsy characteristic. I'm still debating the bench work for the towns. Whatever I do there, it has to be a lot stronger than Panhandle 1.0.

My layout has "open benchwork" except in a town area where I used @4' X 6' plywood.
I have two levels and one end has reverse loops inside a hill. I can get under this
area and stand up inside the hill for track cleaning or other reasons.

Like the lighting - looking to install something similar in the ceiling at my place in PA.

Where do you buy it? Cost?

I do plan to stand on this layout.

Why? Will there be dancing? Will you be installing a brass pole, too?
