One can hope, when looking at such moments as the "Machanicsburg , PA, Main St." photo, that the folks who lived there, on streets vacant of them now, and in some cases with even the streets gone, now, that the residents treasured every moment while they were there, and that their neighbors were part of their treasury.

I doubt that they did when they were there - only later do we age adequately to attain that very small level of wisdom needed to be able to look back, open our eyes, and then appreciate that idea/sentiment/thought/concept - we are told such wisdom in our youth by our elders and only rarely is that one pauses, looks about, and begins to comprehend such a concept. Fewer still live it.

Living in or for the now philosophy would seem to counter that, but only if one understands what now means. Now is elusive....

Yes - fairly candid photo, although the guy up on the balcony seems to have noticed the camera man in action.
