I finally located the card file recording the origins, ownership, manufacturer of all the steam engines that have ever run at the Rail Model Club of Atlanta, at least up to the late 1990's when they stopped tracking that sort of thing. Not surprisingly given the club's age the list of engines removed from service exceeds the ones still left on the layout by almost two to one.
I believe Maroon snagged this shot of RMCA alumni #476 off a recent Ebay listing, it's card indicated its a Scalecraft owned by the late Cliff Cole.

I notice the name Great Southern on the tender. Great Southern was the name of the late Lorrel Joiner's Pike. Mr. Joiner passed on several years back and a lot of his engines and rolling stock ended up on Ebay. He was a well known O Scaler and a member of the O Scale Hall of Fame. I am guessing that may be the origin of that Loco.

It could be, but more likely it was just lettered with his decals. Lorell was more a USH kind of guy, although he did get Everett De Golyer's Lobaugh collection. It almost takes an expert to tell the Lobaugh MT from the Scale Craft version, but that one appears to be Scale Craft.

Of interest - Lorell was related to Pappy Joiner, who brought in the first big East Texas oil strike. Everett has a library named after him and was apparently a world-class petroleum geologist, and an avid O Scale and Lobaugh collector.

Rich -- The Railroad Model Club of Atlanta has been home of the Great Southern Lines for close to seventy years and may pre-date Lorrel Joiner's layout. The club goes back to the late 1930s and the current layout (which is huge) dates to the late 1940s. There was a cover story on the Great Southern last year in O Scale Trains magazine, issue #83 (authored by me). I have been told that the club and Joiner eventually found out about each other and decided that the O-scale world was big enough for two Great Southerns. Pete, a club member, may wish to comment further.

Bob, are you sure of that? As a long time Dallas resident, I had always heard DeGolyer's O-scale locomotives went to the DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University along with his world-class collection of railroad photographs. Maybe I will look into this.

Having been interested in O Scale for close to 20 years, I'm surprised I haven't heard of/read about the Atlanta group before....of course there is always the CRS factor!

Rich, Jim is correct; #476 is not from Lorrell Joiners Great Southern Railroad, as I posted it was identified in the OOS file at the MRCA, which predates Joiner’s pike by a couple of decades and has tender and road# lettering consistent with the rest of the club’s fictional Great Southern Lines steam roster. We actually have a letter from Joiner on file from the early seventies asking the membership if they had any issue with his using the name for his pike, they didn’t of course and we received a thank you basket of Great Southern decals, beer cozys and hats. He was great guy and his layout was quite impressive in most aspects.
Jim, Everett Degolyer had an extensive O scale collection that included both Lobaugh and Max Gray. I specifically recall he purportedly had a complete collection of Max Gray, and in fact would order two of everything much to Bobbye Hall’s delight. Many factory/custom painted pieces of his Max Gray collection were on display at the Degolyer Library in glass cases on the top of the shelves during the 1970’s, though I haven’t seen or heard any more about it since then.

Wealthy Lobaugh collectors would order them custom-built, and the builder would get two kits, returning one finished one to Lobaugh, and keeping the other.

Wealthy donors would do well to get a commitment to display their models. We had some 35 USH models donated to our museum, and as far as I can tell they have been in storage for 30 years. If I cannot get a commitment in writing, my collection will be given to hobbyists or eBayed.

Everett L. DeGolyer, Jr was gone long before I knew who he was. Here he is on the left with Dick Keulbs (president of our local O-scale club until his passing last year), Charles Mizell, and Dean Hale, railfanning near Dallas Union Terminal around 1960:

Photo by Frank Schultz, also once a member of our club. If there is any doubt who has the money in this photo, look at that full-format camera that Everett is lugging around. His son Lee Everett DeGolyer is a model railroader in the Austin-San Antonio region that always comes up for the shows in Dallas and Ft. Worth.

Not being rude/disrespectful, but sooner or later it ALL goes away. If there is anyone (relative/loved one) left at the time of your passing who would benefit from it's sale, that is the way to go. (opinion).

Not sure why there would be a question as to respect, but I agree.

I have a collection of SP Cab Forwards that includes all but the "simpled" versions of the compounds. It includes three MM-2s, an MC-6, two AC-4s (one with a streamlined face like the AC-6), and an AC-8 and AC-10. I would rather they go on display when I croak - I believe they are good enough for that. But I will have a commitment in writing, or I will allow them to be sold by someone who survives me. I will not donate to a museum without a commitment. I have given enough money to museums already.

Beyond that, I probably will not care. Si Simonton had the best idea - find some young person you like, and give it all to him/her. Don't burden your spouse. That assumes you leave your spouse well off to start with.
