A few years back I bit the bullet and purchased 16 1/2 horse Simplicity with a 36" mouth. It's electric start and self driven and the only real issue is keeping the chute aimed so the wind doesn't bring the discharge back turning you into a snow cone. If one comes along that thing can't handle I'm staying inside and praying the roof doesn't collapse. I will probably do the neighbors as I owe him a couple.

Yeah, that's the one, Rich.

True story; too stupid to make up:

Back when my son Tad was very young, we all found ourselves in a waiting room at Dulles Airport as the boarding calls were being made for our flight to Ft. Lauderdale to visit the in-laws over Christmas.

The agent had the microphone in hand, and went through all the motions and, before she could catch herself, read off the bit about "anyone needing help or extra time whilst boarding is welcome to board at this time" and instantly regretted it.

I, my wife, and my son were literally the only ones left seated in the whole room.

As a post-script, when the three of us boarded (by ourselves) we walked down the "jetway" and saw the tagged stuff lined up; a lone umbrella stroller (ours) and at least a dozen wheelchairs.

The Ariens is at least thirty years old. I had it overhauled a couple years ago by the local Deere dealer. The thing runs like a clock, but this is the first storm it has had trouble dealing with the volume of snow. It's a two-stage self-propelled, but I guess just too much snow. My lack of patience probably plays into it as well.

Sorry about the mail-box Sarge...that's always a bummer since you'll need to hustle to get it or a replacement back up so you get your mail. Back when I was driving to Montgomery County every day I used to see the carnage done to mailboxes along route 27 during storms. I think there are a few sadist plow-drivers out there that get their kicks devastating mailboxes. Too much coffee and too many donuts...makes 'em crazy...

I have seen so little snow since I left the north in 1975 I find it hard to believe that so many people can still cope with what I see here and on TV.

Good luck to all.

I'd dare say that Murph's church dinner and raffle is off, and most likely should have been canceled Wednesday night when the track of the storm became obvious. Even with 200 tickets out there, how many are going to show in the face of the storm, a state of emergency declared by the Governor, and possible violation of the law concerning said emergency? How will folks get there, and where will they park if they make it. Lots of good food will go to waste, 'less the refrigerated goodies can be donated to the shelters, and the perishables will get tossed. It's a tough break, but it's been common knowledge the storm was coming since Monday.

Precisely my thoughts. Every word, Mitch.

Well, finally, today, this morning, my wife and I were able to prevail (via phone) upon the "decision" makers ( ) and the dinner was cancelled this morning, which I had advised be done on Monday, when the obvious became apparent.

So, before 11am, we got on the phone and called all the food vendors, some of whom were not even able to get to their restaurants today, and all the ticket holders, to say, "Stay home. Cancelled. Re-scheduled for Feb.13."

Agreed. But they may be Catholics and there could be liquor involved. So don't underestimate there willingness to participate Mitch  On the other hand I couldn't agree more. Our church announced early this morning on FB that they would be closed Sunday.

Now, the wind has dialed back to a civilised breeze, the clouds are broken, and the silence is almost deafening.

There really is no way for me to tell how much, for the wind has sculpted the snow from bare ground to huge contoured dunes.

It really is a lovely evening.

That's just about when we really did get some of the wind that had been forecast and then I could not see the next house over for all of the snow being lifted off the roofs.

In an hour or so I'll be going back out for Snow Blower Part Deux.
I expect nothing and I’m still let down.

The day after is always a lovely day. The place looks great under a blanket of snow:
