Murph, one thing that stands out in your diorama's is the weathering of iron. Nice work! :D
I use a product I purchased from Micro-Mark.

parking in that farmer's field temporary parking lot was a good experience. It felt good plodding through all those chunks of dried earth. I liked the fragrance of it, even the work of getting through it in the sunlight. The whole air was clean and scented with the sounds and fragrances, even some so-called "odors" that belonged there. Also, further up the roadway leading from the fields to the R&T entry, a young man was driving a team of horses as he plowed-up a field right next to the R&T grounds, which was a great treat and pleasure to witness. I had never been so close to such activity previously. Later, when I entered the grounds, a gaggle of carriages was parked in a grouping that seemed particular, and the horses were collected together under a tent (if I remember correctly) which is something I will model someday.

I love the detail of the ramps at each end of the flatcar appearing worn and a bit rusty from use, and the presence of the random piece of metal between tracks is a cool touch, too. Rock on!

Puts me in mind of an old "Red Green" bit: Red is sitting all swaddled in blankets with a big pair O' goggles on, and a ski cap, whilst being covered in falling snow:

He reads from a small note pad: "Winter. Snow falls softly on the driveway, so you get up early to shovel it off. Halfway through you pause to savor the event! After all, it IS your first heart attack!"

My apologies to Red if I butchered that one! It's a bit hard to get the effect of his droll monologue in printed word!

Thanks very much for saying so, Roger. My technique includes gathering a wide variety and array of trees and low folage before I start anything - lots and lots of trees and shrubs. Then, once I start a scene, I have it all array around me at my finger-tips, like a palette, and just make my selections and affix them as the spirit moves me. There is no way i would begin a piece and have to stop to go buy some article/detail or order it. No way. A huge variety is ready for me, or i do not begin.

The same goes for figures, vehicles and, sometimes, even structures. (You should see the amount of ingredients we lug with us in numerous [and heavy!] satchels and valises into FAO when I re-craft that layout on-site!)

I think yours looks better than mine, though what I have shown in this thread is supposed to be older and more rusted than what you have shown here. Yours has a depth to it that I like very much and is inspiring and instructive. You have modeled what you have seen, likely, whereas I have modeled what I have imagined such rusty machinery to look like. There's a more authentic truth to yours, as a result, I believe. I apparently don't have as clear a memory of the rusty machinery I saw in the steel mills in my hometown as a teenager as I thought I did. I use a variety of acrylic paint colors and some powders. I'll take a look at Micro-Mark, now, thanks to you, and use your photos as an inspiration.

Rust colors and appearance is something that I improved in the last years.

I did not believe it when I first saw it (no camera) so I went back on another trip and detoured to get the pictures. I wish that I could have
gone inside. Not too far, just enough to look at the interior.

A lot of posts in the last few days. I saw a program on PBS TV about digging the Pamana Canal using steam shovels loading into railroad hoppers. I was amazed at how fast they worked those steam shovels. It was about as fast as you read this, scoop, swivel, dump, swivel back and scoop again.
A couple of pages back you were talking about Russian ammo. AK 47's are illegal in this Democrat party controlled state, but I have a SKS. A few years ago the Democrats had a bill pending to add a 10 cents tax on each bullet. I was sure it would pass and my friend and I went to a lot of gun shows. There is a company at the gun shows in the western states named
Wholesale Ammo. They bring big trucks of ammo to the gun shows. I bought really a lot of ammo.
You could get a case, 1,000 rounds of 762x39 for as low as $90. I wound up with 4 cases. We go to the pistol range mostly where centerfire rifle in not allowed so I never shoot it. I don't like shooting high power anyway and as old as I am I may never get to it.

All that "rust" looks super good! The American Pickers will probably soon be beating on your doors!

Murph, the modeling is beautiful, and yes, it is reminiscent of R&T.

For complete verisimilitude to an Amish buggy, however, it needs to be more grey than cream colored, and two-toned, and their wheels are always painted black. However, I'm sure there are other sects within the religion that use different coloring.

Here's the two parts of the Amish 'parking lot' you mentioned...
