George, back in the 80's someone made factory smell modules. "Ole Factory Aires" Remember those? Not suggesting, just saying.

OMG, are you serious?

If so, I don't think so. 40 years later and I can't forget the smell of that bizarre combination of HCl and palm oil used to preserve coils. When the HCl reclamation plant runs, the whole town smells of it.

I saw a layout,don't remember where,that had smells and sounds.Think of a barn.
Cute one time.

The idea would probably work for a steel mill but I understand that smoke is being vetoed.?

Also think of the show that could be made with some night scenes.

I read somewhere that back in the 80's, NYC subways experienced roughly 45 felony crimes a day.

Wouldn't surprise me. NYC was in bankruptcy at the time. It took Rudy Giuliani to clean things up and get cops on patrol.

Yes, it would be cute 1 time. But modeling this mill accurately in the 1950's would be an environmental disaster. You'd need graphite falling from the sky, the smell of acid and coal, and copious amounts of different color smoke belching from stacks (no air pollution controls at all).

Bad operational model:
1) Run for 1 hour
2) File for EPA superfund site

Not good.

Updated 1/6/2014:

Not a whole lot moving in this very cold weather, but some progress:

• All sidewalks for the Crawford's Crossing highway overpass have been cut to their 1" (4 scale feet) width. The sidewalks need to be painted, scored for expansion joints, and washed with the India Ink/isopropyl alcohol mix.
• Underlying masonite "floor" for the overpass has been cut to the correct width to support the cross sections of 2 railing pieces, 2 sidewalks, and the roadway.
• Construction crane parts, specifically the boom and remaining cab and chassis, have been painted. Still have to do all the smaller parts (wheel hubs, support arms and feet, etc.).

Interesting week or so:[LIST]
[*]Was held up by the cold weather (unable to get out to paint). A friend helped me with the use of his paint booth. He also did a lot of painting for me.
[*]Got all the sidewalks for Crawford's Crossing painted. Scoring them will be saved for the upcoming weekend.
[*]Got all the parts for the Lionel Construction Crane kit (6-19200) painted. That kit was finally assembled and mated with my electromagnet. Next steps are the application of decals, Dullcote, and some weight under the truck frame.

Just finished (except for decals)) my Lionel construction crane. It is painted for Weirton Steel and is fitted with my electro-magnet for scrap duty.

Updated 1/13/2014:

Tonight I tested my jig for cutting a straight 6" line in a Weaver telephone pole. I used my MicroLux table saw to make the cut. The slot will hold a very thin wire attached to a 3 VDC LED light. The fact that this worked means that my plan for making lighted telephone poles is a "GO".

This is a big step forward for modeling lighted telephone poles.

You'll probably find this amusing, but one of my offbeat sources for MRR scratchbuilding supplies is an R/C car and airplane shop called The Hidden Hangar. They used to be truly hidden (like in someone's garage on an obscure country road), but they are now on a main street in the suburbs east of Harrisburg. Anyway, I stopped and picked up some thinner (1/8" vs 3/32") copper tubing for use as the arms on the lighted telephone poles. When I got home, I tried fitting my twisted pair of wires (with the LED attached) through the hole. It fits! We are another small step along in the planned assembly of telephone poles.

I am trying to do any and all prep work for this assembly (making slots for wires - see post above, painting, cutting, gathering of required tools, jigs, photos). My plan is to set up an assembly line and make all quantities (27) and varieties (6) of poles for the City of Weirton module.

So Rufus - I saw in the one photo that you painted your Keil O-scale lamp shades black. Is that your recommendation for color? Any one else have a suggestion?

Food for thought/a few comments. Street light mast arms are usually 2" or so in diameter. As far as the color, I remember green (a nice forest green), silver or gray, and black. The topsides of radial-wave reflectors were usually green. The ex-Baltimore ball-globe fixture that I have is painted in the green mentioned above. Post a few pictures of the work in progress, please.
